Just seen three worms whilst wiping my child’s bottom! I think I might cry!! His bottom has a little rash around it too. Have sent dh to the pharmacy. Please tell me they can give me something?? I feel absolutely sick - hate anything like this!!!

All children get worms.
Yes you can buy Ovex at the pharmacy.
You need to treat everyone in the household.
Read the instructions carefully and follow them.
Look at the NHS website too.

It isn't anything to get upset about. As soon as they go to nursery they get worms.
If you are lucky, they might not get headlice until primary school.

Feelingpoorlysick · 27/08/2020 18:31

Yes, you can get over the counter treatment. You will all need to take it as it spreads easily. The pharmacist should explain everything.
It really isnt that much of a big deal, so don't worry!

Cinderellashoes · 27/08/2020 18:34

Well he’s 5 and we’ve never had worms before! We also have an 18 month old and we’ve got stuff from the pharmacy but the baby can’t take it so I’ll need to ring the gp. Sorry if it’s a stupid question but do I need to clean the carpets??

I think hoovering and damp dusting should be enough.
Probably if you ring the GP they will write you a prescription.
You have done well to escape the worms till now.
I was horrified when mine got them for the first time, but, like the headlice, it only takes one classmate whose parents don't treat, to spread them constantly.

JoanieCash · 27/08/2020 19:06

What’s quite interesting is that you’ve had it during lockdown when school/nursery has been shut. Would hot wash current bedding/PJs & clean loo seat thoroughly. Remember second dose in 2 weeks.

Makinglists · 27/08/2020 19:16

Lost count how many times we've had it. Ovex for everyone who can have it. Wash all bedding. If you can wash cuddlies. Vaseline around the bottom end is soothing if itching is bad. Repeat two weeks later as the little buggers have a 2 week lifecycle. Strangely my boys get worms but have never had nits - not sure which parasite I would prefer?

itwilldropoff · 27/08/2020 19:38

We discovered one child had nits the same weekend we discovered the other had worms, that was funHmm

Cinderellashoes · 27/08/2020 19:46

Thanks for the replies! It was ovex we’ve had. Every time I look at 5 year olds bum there is another one crawling out Shock

Baby will have to get prescription I think

Dh and me took ours! Don’t think I’ve ever swallowed anything so fast Grin

Our little one has been at nursery since mid June and my son did a few key workers days from June- July as I’m a nurse

We had a new pup in June too and she had worms but fairly sure she had roundworms

Dogs and children don't get the same worms.

endofthelinefinally · 27/08/2020 21:20

Well, as long as they are not exposed to dog faeces anyway.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 27/08/2020 21:29

Keep his nails clean and short. You don’t want him biting his nails if he’s been scratching his bum.

Cinderellashoes · 27/08/2020 21:30

Just looked and actually says threadworms don’t affect dogs! So god knows where they’ve come from. Am thinking the baby may have brought them from nursery but kinda surprised I can see so many around the oldests bum and none on anyone else. I’m so itchy Blush

The incubation period is 2 weeks. So if you work backwards you might be able to figure out the timing. Nursery is the worst place. Sand and playdough, (shudder).

goingtokickthisweight · 27/08/2020 21:42

I can't be no help but just wanted to say I've a 12 year old and 8 year old and we've never had them, just so all first time mums don't panick that it's definitely going to happen to them 🙂

Lovewinemorethanhusband · 27/08/2020 21:47

My 4 year old got worms from preschool, it was hideous i was 8 months pregnant, i couldnt get treated so was certain id give birth and have worms all over my baby, even though i knew i was having a section!, we treated everyone else and the nesting was good for cleaning everything in the house!! I treated everyone as soon as i came home from hospital after having baby even though i didnt know if we had any but i just wanted to be sure!!

Cinderellashoes · 30/08/2020 19:42

How long does the stuff take to work? Had it Friday night but my son is still getting live worms in his poo and out his bum at night!!! The medicine was a pain to get into him and I’m worried he didn’t get the full dose.

Don't forget to get a second family pack of ovex and set your calendar for 14 day booster for everyone.

gingajewel · 30/08/2020 22:56

I think it was about 48-72 hours before I started seeing a difference, I’m like you op, it made me feel so sick! Make sure you take a second dose in two weeks!

crystalize · 30/08/2020 23:23

Look up diatomaceous earth food grade. Natural stuff kills parasites that is good for the gut too. Can be used with humans and animals. Add it to water it just tastes chalky. I always have it in as was completely freaked when I found them in child years ago!

Gogetem · 19/05/2021 05:24

This is the most recent thread I can find on this subject and am in desperate need of advice/support. Am 37 weeks pg with no. 4 and have caught worms from the kids. Whole house has been treated with mebendazole of course, nearly a week into strict hygiene measures and I’m on my knees. Called doc and no help, they can offer nothing. Just 6 weeks of killing myself washing bedding every day he said, deep cleaning all the time. I’m exhausted, low iron levels and basically had a breakdown over it all yesterday, couldn’t stop crying, hit the wardrobe and broke it. I can’t face giving birth with them, can’t keep going with this cycle of such strict hygiene measures/washing, esp having just given birth. I have lost hope and am not sleeping, so uncomfortable. Heard about the diamotaceous earth and bought some on Amazon yesterday. Too scared to try it though. DH says I should just take the mebendazole as the risks are low and only not prescribed due to no trials being done on pg women.
Sorry for the long post but I need help!

HPmagic · 22/05/2021 19:08

@Gogetem I thought you can take the medication as you are so late in pregnancy and in certain circumstances. I would double check with GP but I am sure you can at this stage.
