Its nowere else on her body , and her face looks slightly puffy, she has no other symptoms. Its strange how its just were it is , as I thought heat rash , but its really cool in here.

Could this be an allergic reaction , she had blakcurrant squash yesterday, something she never has.

I will give her some piriton, I just cant believe what this kid has been though and now theres something else , albeit only mild, shes been shoved with things for weeks and weeks.

Her rash has spread more now and shes scratching all over , but says its not itchy . Her face is nearly back to normal , but shes still very puffy around her neck.

I cant get hold of our pead , seems hes on holiday , would have been a relief to speak wth him about all this as he knows her historyand the whole tonsils & repeated infection problems. So Ive phoed the ward to see if we can speak with someone , I dont know when they will call back, but they may ask to see her in the assesmant room on the ward rather than be admitted.

I dont know if I need to worry really , its just a very odd weekend with her and such a mix of problems. I dont know wether to give her pirition or what to do really. Thankfully her fever seems to have gone though.

IM home alone , dd2 is screaming all the time and wants me to pick her up , dd1 is contantly at me for food , drinks , helping with arts and crafts, Im a wreck and have upset tummy myself.

Hi melsy, what a dreadful weekend you've had. I hope you all feel better soon.

goingfor3 · 08/10/2007 11:24

Your dd sounds very much like mine did when we had measles. The rash started on the face then spread all over the body, swollen eyes, chesty cough and earache, the rash wasn't itchy though and the temp started for the girls before the rash though I didn't get a temp until after the rash started. Have they ruled it out?

melsy · 08/10/2007 11:30

hi anorak , havent spoken in ages. How are you? Its been a dreadful few months , this is just getting to much now.

It seems they've ruled out everything like that due to her being up to date on her ims.

I'm living at my sister's house now, waiting day by day for our Bermuda visas to be granted. DH has been there for 6 weeks already (he has a 3 year secondment at the Bank of Bermuda) Myself, DD2 and DS will be joining him just as soon as we get the visas.

Is it impossible to contract measles if you've had the jab? I thought it was still possible if unlikely.

melsy · 08/10/2007 11:50

wow Bermuda , amazing , that ll be a whole change of life !!!

She doesn't seem ill though , her ear is painful if touched ( but then infection has done that) and her temp has gone. Shes happily playing thankfully.Just scratching all over the place. I just dont know if its viral as they said ?????? Im relieved the facial swelling has gone , as that was very frightening , she looked like a different person altogether. They said in some cases it could all be linked , but Im not so sure.

ok managed to get hold of a nurse at the childrens ward were dd was admitted and they got a pead to call me. They told me to bring her in,so of we went after lunch. Glad I did ,although we now have a 2nd diagnoses of strepticocci , so she has 2 infections . The augmentin has to be taken for 10 days not 7 . The rash is part of the infection and the swelling although VERY rare , is also down to the infection. The sandpaper like way it presents is typical of strep and it wasnt like this on Saturday when she was admitted orignally.

As this is the 3rd infectionn in that area and the 5th infection overall in her body,in the last few weeks, it looks more likely that tonsils need removing asap .

OP posts:
Tiggiwinkle · 08/10/2007 18:19

It is Scarket Fever then Melsy? (Strep throat with sandpaper rash) Does she have a "strawberry tongue" (either coated with white with red bits sticking through, or bright red)?

melsy · 08/10/2007 20:42

oh hadnt thought of that , but Idont know much about a lot of these illneses, thats weird you mention it ,as I was sitting with dd1 on a bench calling dh about everything after the appt and a nana was talking about how her daughetr called scarlet had scarlet fever !!!

I think it is whitish, her tongue, with little raised red dots. EEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKK Im all anxious now. Ok do I google???

OP posts:
Papillon · 08/10/2007 20:48

get a marker pen out an join the dots, maybe its a message from her allergy goddess

any time dd has her rash spots I give her garlic oil tablets, seems to help and a neutral mosituriser, i have one called crocodile skin cream! funny name huh!

hope she is better soon X

melsy · 08/10/2007 21:40

hi paps , hows things ? Ive been googling.

will remember the pen next time !!

Defooo deffooo think it was/is scarelt fever now, as she had that burnt face thing. my poor poor little girl. Why oh why couldnt they have diagnosed this on Sat , its a basic childs illness fgs. Highly contagious too at the stage she was in the ward too. Thank gawd I didnt take her to the parties or school.

One of my DSs had Scarlet Fever earlier this year. Luckily I recognised it because one of his older brothers had it some years ago. It is very important that they take antibiotics for at least 10 days.I hope the hospital asked you to take your Dd to the GP for a urine test after a couple of weeks? (This is to check for any problems with the kidneys which can be a complication of Scarlet Fever.)
How is she feeling now?

belgo · 09/10/2007 07:54

yes antibiotics are very important for scarlet fever.

Papillon · 09/10/2007 08:03

I am well Melsy. It is quite warm here already and I am starting to realise I am out of practise at long summers. Gotten used to the short dash of a Euro summer. Going to find myself a good hat to shade my face.

how are u? apart fromt he obvious

melsy · 09/10/2007 12:00

sounds glorious paps , get that hat!!!!No such luck here , its been awful , grey wet and grey !!

I was good , but now Im not so, Im wrung out like a madwomen right now. This medical lark is the most frustrating thing in the world.

Ive been trying to contact the Doctor we saw yesterday to discuss it with her and I got through to someone else who said scarlet fever was unlikely, as shes getting better now and that I shouldn't be saying it was scarlet fever. , so were did the burnt face , sandpaper itchy rash , white tongue pink spots come from, was I making it all up ???????????? Seems like I had another 13yr old registrar at the end of the phone. She said scarlet fever doesn't require anti biotics and that its the strep that does , yes I know that thank you. I asked what time does the doc come out of clinic , jsut so i know how long to wait and she starts sprouting about how she cant interrupt her as it wold be rude ,errrr were did I ask to interrupt her. FGS AAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRHGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

Why will no one bloody acknowledge me there and be more sensitive.

Im also worried about her kidneys as shes had 2 UTI's recently and one haf her hospitalised. She has a mild dilatation of a valve from the kidney too the urethra , which is being monitored.

WHY OH WHY was our paed away on holiday this week. I feel Im going mental , like Im talking and no one is listening , (present company not included!!)

OP posts:
melsy · 09/10/2007 12:04

actually I thought scarlet fever DID need antibiotcs as well as Strep ??????

OP posts:
Beenleigh · 09/10/2007 13:21

You poor poor thing, what an absolute nightmare! Can you get down to the doctors surgery, or hospital and insist someone sees her.
It amazes me that there are still health care professionals who feel threatened by 'expert' patients. Who the eff do they think they are telling you not to find out about your own daughters illness and not to use medical terms.
Hope she starts to improve soon, good luck
x

Tiggiwinkle · 09/10/2007 14:22

Melsy-Scarlet Fever absolutely MUST be treated with antibiotics. (Strep throat and scarlet fever are actually caused by the same streptococcus bugs-some people are susceptible and go on to develop SF, some just have a very sore throat. And it is vital she has a urine test in a few weeks too.
My DS was a lot better by day 3 of the illnes, but he still had scarlet fever and still needed antibiotics. The receptionist does not know what she is talking about!

melsy · 09/10/2007 14:24

Thankfully beenleigh , the red tomato burnt look subsided by Monday , but the rash however spread more and was really itchy and my mum was really worried , as she looked so red and burnt, like severe excema!!! We saw a doctor at the hospital yesterday . Its just typical that the scarlet face thing wasnt seen by anyone.

OP posts:
Tiggiwinkle · 09/10/2007 14:25

Sorry-just saw you said registrar not receptionist. Very worrying as she obviously does not have very basic medical knowledge!

melsy · 09/10/2007 14:29

tiggi , thankfully shes been told to have her augmentin for 10 days by the doctor we saw yesterday. I have no idea who I spoke to on the ward at lunch time ,when trying to track dwn the doctor we saw. It really got my goat though.

The pead that shes been looked after by at another hosptial (through private insurance) had said that she needed another water test in a few weeks , as she had the 2 uti's a few weeks ago.

oohhh I soooo wish I could speak with him , but we have to be careful how many tests and procedures she has that route as the insurance only covers so much.

OP posts:
melsy · 09/10/2007 14:33

ok Ive re read my thread , her face was bright brght red on Friday BEFORE she went to the hospital , unofrutnately the odema of the face prevented the peads at the hospital seeing this. SO IM NOT going mad.

OP posts:
melsy · 09/10/2007 18:14

AT LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST, confirmation that melsy indeed has all her marbles.

Doctor called and confirmed that yes it is scarlet fever, she said she didnt want to alarm me and say so yesterday ,as she had read up on dd1's history the last few weeks and thought I would really freak out. But I did anyway and all day Ive been a mess . Someone has to go in tommorow and pick up more anti biotics.

I am, I know a crazy mum that has to research and investigate everything and anything my children can or could have and Im sure many of us do it with the internet informtaion available . I also have a gp for a fil and he can pin point all sorts of things we hadnt thought of. So I cant escape medical information being available.

I am worried though as there are complication that can arise several weeks after and dd's health is already impaired. Ive made an appointment at the paediatrician next week so we can at least discuss the next step.

OP posts:
Tiggiwinkle · 09/10/2007 22:46

I was pretty sure it sounded like Scarlet Fever from your description Melsy. Try not to worry too much-I have not seen your other threads so am not sure what other problems your DD has had. But complications from the scarlet fever are rare so long as she has the antibioitics. Keep an eye on her for the next couple of weeks as I know you will. My two DSs have had no long term problems from it.
