My son needs a tonsillectomy. Any advice?

My 5 year old is averaging 5-6 episodes of tonsillitis a year. He gets badly affected, he loses his apetite and start vomiting a few days prior to infection flaring up, his temperature usually reaches 40, lasts for around 4 days, he is moaning on the sofa for that time, can bare swallow, etc. He gets antibiotics, stays a week off school, it takes him a few weeks to regain his apetite after, and then it starts again. This is usually going on from September to May.

We saw an ENT specialist today, and he agreed he should have his tonsils out.

Has anybody's child had this procedure done? Any advise? Any ill effects? How long did it take to recover?

I feel so sorry for my brave little man.

Hello
From personal experience I think your son is better off with his tonsils out - I waited till I was 21 and went through tonsillitis all the time having high fever..etc. and a lot of side effects. The surgery takes about 10 minutes and kids recover really fast. Usually first 3 days liquid & pureed stuff, after 1 week eat more or less normally, full recovery is 2 weeks but that is really FULL recovery so with a 5 yo it is probably faster. I ate a lot of ice cream before eating my meals so it took the edge of the pain :-) I dont know if doctors still recommend it, but if your LO likes ice cream its a great treatment and really makes the pain less. Good luck

My ds had his tonsils and adenoids out and gromits in in the same op when he was two.
The worst part for me was being in the room when they put him to sleep. I fell to peices as I was led out of the door.
But he got through it brilliantly. Took him home the same night with no ill effects.
