Does this sound like underactive thyroid?

I am a 28 year old female, I am severely fed up with my health, I've had issues for a few years now regarding weight gain, acne, missing periods and was diagnosed with PCOS.

From October 2019 until April 2020 my acne had cleared and my periods had become regular again.

However after April's period I have had none and from around about may time have had these following symptoms -

Tired - sleep for 8 hours per night then still struggle to keep eyes open during day 2-3 hour naps if can

Unexplained Weight gain

Constipated

Hot flashes

Shaky in between meals, made better when I eat

Numbness in my arms

Muscle pain

No period since March

Heart palpitations

Persistent nausea which is better when eating

Hair loss in eyebrows

Dry skin

I seen the doctor in July but hadn't really taken much notice of all the symptoms together and mainly complained of my heart palpitations, he done a blood test and ecg - he said everything was fine, my blood glucose was high - 13 but my hba1c was normal as was my TSH for thyroid.

However, since then these symptoms are getting steadily worse, I have never in my life experienced such lethargy in my life, any activity, even just walking a little and I am ready for a nap. I could sleep all day and it is not like me.

Having done some research I genuinely believe I have hypothyroidism. I am going to phone tomorrow and book in with a female doctor who dealt with my PCOS. The thing is I don't want to be seen as a hypochondriac that won't accept the answer. Does this sound like underactive thyroid? Would you push for another test?

Could be. Push them to test for the full set of thyroid function tests: T3, T4, TSH

Also: any chance you could be pregnant?

ifitmakesyouhappy · 23/08/2020 20:10

@MiniMaxi I will do, thanks. No chance whatsoever, in fact chance would be a fine thing! Grin

I'm under active thyroid and recognize some but not all of those. Low iron causes me much more tiredness (and some other issues on your list) than low thyroxine - did they test your iron?

ifitmakesyouhappy · 23/08/2020 20:23

@Sausagis can I ask what your symptoms are if you don't mind? They said they tested "everything" so assuming iron levels? I had to take iron tablets in pregnancy but none since.

I really just worry that they're not going to find anything wrong and just tell me it's psychological, because they are real symptoms I am having and I can't live with them forever.

Possibly, but my money would be on low iron levels. I suffer from both but it's the low iron that causes me things like palpitations. Get a blood test, and pay particularly attention to your serum ferritin levels. Anything below about 40 is worth treating with iron tablets.

ifitmakesyouhappy · 23/08/2020 20:49

So could low iron cause weight loss, hair loss, muscle pain etc?

Have you had your vitamin D level checked? Wouldn't explain all the symptoms, but possibly the tiredness and muscle pain. Also agree you should get your iron levels checked, including ferritin.

DanaScully53 · 23/08/2020 21:02

Have the full thyroid test including antibody. Have you had a vitamin B12 test because they dont tend to test. I was diagnosed with Hashis thyroiditis and still felt crap, numb, tingling arms etc and got tested for all other immune disorders. Yep, B12 mega low so now on jabs for life. Feel a lot better.

ifitmakesyouhappy · 23/08/2020 21:03

@DanaScully53 I will have to ask for all these tests. I'm thinking as I was mainly complaining about the heart palps at last appointment maybe the only checked what is relevant?

Also how do I ask for these tests without offending the GP? I don't want her to think I don't trust her to do her job...

Some might be indicative of low thyroxine evils but some would be more suggestive of hyperactivity.
Just ask GP to do a full range of bloods.

ifitmakesyouhappy · 24/08/2020 09:13

So I asked for TSH results and my level is 1.98 so completely normal. So what now? Waiting on doctor phoning me.
