DD1 has caught them from playschool> I have got some Full Marks solution which seems really good, and also got Tea tree Childrens Head Lice Repellent shampoo, and detangling spray(tho can't use the spray on under 3's).

Was just wondering if anyone had success with these and how good they found them.
Have also been told to get a Nitty Gritty comb from boots as they are really good.

Euuuuuuuw, I had no idea what they even looked like til I oiled DD1's hair, it seems to work they came off her hair onto my fingers as I put it in[vom]

Am off now to comb out, bath and shampoo so any eplies are welcome, will check later.

My mum says I should not treat DD2 or myself unless actually infested, but my main question is does the repellent shampoo work?????

You dont need anything except a nitty gritty comb and tons of conditioner IMO.

dustystar · 04/10/2007 17:23

I agree with freaky. The soltutions are a waste of money in my opinion

39andcounting · 04/10/2007 17:56

Unfortunately it is a fact of life, head lice and thread worms !!

All I now do with my DD is every hair wash she gets combed through thoroughly with lots of conditioner, she is used to it now and it is the best method.

Prevention is better than cure !! With regards to treating the whole family you are meant to as well as strip all beds etc. I did treat us all the first time but really think its a scam on the manufacturers part really as these products are not cheap.

Thoroughly check everyone now you know you have got them in the family though, just in case.

totalyfreaky · 04/10/2007 17:57

A tip while checking the rest of the family, use a magnifying glass

totalyfreaky · 04/10/2007 17:57

Oh and if checking someone with long hair, bites on the back of the neck are a giveaway.

RosyBelle · 04/10/2007 18:04

Don't worry about washing all the pillow cases & sheets though - nits do not survive away from the scalp and you can't get re-infected from linen.

We also use the Tea Tree repellent shampoo every other week with conditioner and a nit comb... but she has still caught it twice in the last 12 months... but thats good compared to some children I know.

We found full marks rubbish - and when it became difficult to get rid of them 1st time we used something called Hedrin - it was brilliant & the chemist said it was the only thing that worked.

All the while some parents don't bother treating their children it will always be a problem.
Good luck

MamaG · 04/10/2007 18:05

Rosybelle I'm afraid I disagree

I believe nits can live for 3 days off the head, so on pillowcases etc

agree hedrin is good

lisad123 · 04/10/2007 18:09

i spent over an hour combing dd last night too
I agree nitty gitty comb is great, and best if you can do it regular.
Good luck

fawkeoff · 04/10/2007 18:12

dd has had these little creatures a few times.i use hedrin and i strip everyones beds not just hers and make her have her own towels.

I spent a fortune on lotions and potions to discover that the nitty griity comb and conditioner work best. Try to comb conditioner with the comb once a week to stop the infestation.

vacua · 04/10/2007 18:33

Combing and Avalon Organic Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner has kept us nit-free all term so far, yay!

RosyBelle · 04/10/2007 18:37

MamaG - you may be right but I got that info from the NHS Direct site.

BandofMutantMonsters · 04/10/2007 18:39

OH, new question.......

I can not use the full marks on DD2 cos she has to be 2yo, so what is good for a 14 mth old??????????

xXxamyxXx · 04/10/2007 18:45

BandofMutantMonsters · 04/10/2007 18:50

Hmm, did her hair last night and got loads of actual lice out and still eggs in there this am.
Going to get this nittygritty comb today, this is the one that's good for getting eggs, I believe.

So do you guys comb once a week even when there is no sign of them, as a just in case???
