Do you always get offered sedation with an endoscopy?

I am very worried I wouldn't be sedated for it

Eggplant I wasn't being rude, it's not my fault that he/she took it that way. Saying there may be more staff could have potentially put someone off for fear of being a nuisance as such, both of you have read my point in the wrong tone. Just a simple "oh don't worry that's rubbish", so yes, being sensitive.

@jellybeans44
I did find her message scary actually, so yes your message was reassuring.

they don't use an anaesthetist I don't think they use a technician or nurse to do the sedation

When I get sedated in a private hospital I always have an anaesthetist do but nhs is generally a nurse

Either way I know they don't need extra people in the room to do it but I didn't know if they offered it

So thank you for your message

I was offered sedation on the day for my gastroscopy; I didn't take it, I just had the throat numbing. They did say if I struggled without we could stop and I could then opt for the sedation though it would obviously delay the procedure.

I'm torn as to whether I should have accepted the sedation; the procedure was horrendous, I don't think my throat numbing worked well enough and I thought I was going to choke throughout, but then I was able to walk out straight away and didn't have any time to come round etc. So that made life much easier and as is almost always the way - horrible for the 20minutes I was in there, but no lasting impact at all.

I'm glad it was reassuring, that was my genuine intention. I hope it all goes well OP :) stay as relaxed as you can and remember to breathe :)

When I had my endoscopy they did not offer sedation at all. It was at a private hospital where they were taking on the overflow from my hospital. If I'd insisted on sedation then it would have been referred back to the hospital to wait.
I would call again and clarify the situation make it clear that you need to be sedated and if that's not an option its a waste of time you going on the day to discuss.
Fwiw I would choose no sedation given the option now.

The letter just came along with my Covid swab reference

And it says I'll be offered the option of sedation (which ill take)

Do you still gag if you're sedated

Thats good, at least you know its on offer.

I’ve had one without sedation. I’d read up on it beforehand on the internet and was petrified going in. It’s not pleasant, but it’s really not that bad and the procedure only lasts for a very short while. They’ll stop if you want them to. If I needed one again I would have it without sedation again. I drove home 10 mins after having it done and had pizza for tea. Smile

My throat was completely numb with the spray so I didn't gag
cultkid · 20/08/2020 16:49

It says it's a gastroscope I hope it's not grim

No, I went with DD who had decided on sedation. The clinic was running late and they told DD she either had it without sedation or not at all!

She agreed to no sedation. She told me it was the worst experience of her life - she felt like she was drowning! One nurse was supposed to comfort her and another was to help, whoever was doing it. In fact, they both had to deal with her!

She was really shaken when she came out!

@DarkMintChocolate

That sounds horrendous omg 😭😭

Yes, when we saw the consultant, there must have been something in the notes, as he said

“I wouldn’t have put you through that!”

cultkid · 20/08/2020 20:12

My friend is an anaesthetist at the hospital
He said he will come

Thank god
