Saturday evening DS had chest pains and palpitations, filled in 111 form said call 999. Paramedics came and wired him up could not find much but said to see GP this week. Not too bad yesterday a few palps. This morning went to work, pain and palps. again. Phoned GP he is now going to be put on a heart monitor for 24 hours. Anyone else had someone so young with this issue?

I’m just going to put this here. I don’t have much input, OP, but this service is a free service offered by the NHS and personally, I think all young people should take advantage of it. I hope your DC gets some thorough answers. Flowers

Also, having had a heart attack in my 40s (I’ve had palpitations since my 20s), I wouldn’t hesitate to go straight to A&E.
Is your DC tall and thin by chance?

Unescorted · 17/08/2020 14:23

Unfortunately yes...

There is a charity that will scan their heart to check for abnormalities - we had our DS done b/c he does a lot of endurance sport.

Sounds like he could have long QT syndrome. I have this though it hasn’t been a huge problem until recently. I’m on beta blockers. Has he had an ECG? Try and push for an electrocardiologist/arrhythmia specialist.

TheVanguardSix · 17/08/2020 14:34

Push hard! Paramedics said my ECG was normal. I went into cardiac arrest 10 minutes later. Sorry to scare you. My DH is a GP and he said, “This is anything but normal.” I arrested as I was blue lighted to A&E.

TheVanguardSix · 17/08/2020 14:36

Paramedics also took me to the wrong hospital. So... as valuable as paramedics are, and as grateful as I am for their tireless work and experience, your DC needs to see actual doctors who can read an ECG. Flowers

After the Holter monitor ask for a treadmill test - that'll show any indication of long QT (which is rare so don't google and panic). It's far more likely to be nothing sinister at all, even anxiety.

TheVanguardSix · 17/08/2020 14:50

He could actually have a B12 deficiency. He is very young. I feel badly, putting the fear of god in you, OP. I am sorry. It's just that I've lived with palpitations for years. Being quite tall and thin can make a person more susceptible to long QTs but it's not a death sentence by any means. It just needs to be managed. It's treatable. I'll be on beta-blockers for life and I check in with an arrhythmia specialist from time to time. If you want to pursue this and really get answers, I would really just go straight for a cardiologist who specialises in electrophysiology. Your son will get clear answers and a good, long-term plan for a long, healthy life under the guidance of a consultant... that is IF your DS does have a heart condition.

justasking111 · 17/08/2020 15:13

@TheVanguardSix thank you. Family on mums side do have a history of Brughada disease, a couple of generations ago a lot of sudden deaths of young cousins, my lot are scornful of that though so I have kept quiet after being poo poohed.

We have private healthcare, so I think I will push for him to see a cardiologist.

It might be atypical angina, also known as Prinzmetal angina. When do the symptoms occur?

JacobReesMogadishu · 23/08/2020 19:47

Dd had this. They gave her an ecg which was fine and never did anything else.

But then they did find out she was vit d deficient, b12 deficiency and coeliac and since sorting those the chest pain and palpitations seem to have stopped.

OverTheRainbow88 · 23/08/2020 19:50

I have ANVRT which is a type of abnormal fast heart rhythm. It is a type of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).
It means my heart rate can go up to 250 beats per min but by the time the paramedics arrive and do a trace it can be normal again. It only got diagnosed after a 2 week heart ecg trace- well 2 1 weeks: I’ve had a heart ablation since and it’s much improved. I avoid caffeine at all costs, and avoid anything can could make my heart skip a beat which then causes my heart to go out of rhythm.

Mondaymanic · 23/08/2020 20:48

Could it be anxiety. I get what feels like palps and chest pain when mine is bad? X

The screening charity mentioned is fantastic, they also fully scanned my daughter and they’ll also ask about family history. Each session is free but you c an volunteer a donation, the session held will be in memory of a young person who died via an undiagnosed condition.

@itsnotcameron - as this is a zombie thread (old thread) would probably be better of starting your own.
