Any thoughts? Sudden onset of numbness / tingling right side of body

I don’t post often but just wondering if anyone has suffered anything similar and can offer any advice please?

I had a really restless sleep on Wednesday night and woke up with a very strange / horrible sensation in my right leg (like something was crawling inside it). Throughout Thursday this got progressively worse and by yesterday afternoon, the majority of the right side of my body felt numb & tingly (like when you’ve been to the dentist and the injection starts to wear off). My right toes, foot, leg, bum, torso, arm, hand and fingers are all affected. I can feel touch but I can’t sense what type of temperature is touching me if that makes sense? For e.g. brushing past a chair felt really hot against my skin!

I sought GP advise yesterday and was sent to a&e where I spent all night. They have ruled out a stroke and did a CT scan which they advised was normal but have made an urgent referral for me to see a neurologist this week.

It’s driving me crazy and stopping me from doing my normal day to day activities but not particularly painful. Just strange and horrible sensations.

I’m not sure if I’ve managed to explain this properly but has anyone experienced anything similar? What was your diagnosis? Thank you.

I had similar some years ago. ..hospital tests revealed nothing. .I concluded after my own research it was down to panic attacks and GAD.

hope you feel better soon and good luck

Thanks for sharing your experience. How long did it take for your symptoms to go away?

Gosh. ,its hard to say because they came and went periodically. I was in my mid twenties when it started. I do know it's very scary..Please try not to stress..impossible I know!

I’ve had a phone call from the hospital this morning and advised I need to see neurologist urgently. Have an appointment at 2pm. I’m shitting myself. Still feel numb / tingly on the whole right side of my body. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Hi @yorkshirepudgf I read your post yesterday but didn’t reply as didn’t know if I should. I had this and mine turned out to be MS, totally unexpected and I had no symptoms prior to the numbness.

I hope you got some answer in your call with the neurologist Flowers

I hope your appointment has gone ok! It could be a pinched nerve they will resolve itself, or it could be something a bit more serious.

yorkshirepudgf · 17/08/2020 17:07

Thanks for your replies. Have seen a consultant and have an MRI scan booked for the head and spine first thing in the morning.

@Tuesday40 sorry to hear that you have MS. How old were you when you were diagnosed if you don’t mind me asking? I’m 37 and have had nothing like this before either. It’s just so strange!

Hi @yorkshirepudgf I was 40 at the time. It was a huge shock and very upsetting. But after getting over the shock I’ve decided I’m going to be ok- treatment has come on so much in the last 10 years it’s not the diagnosis that it once was. I’ve changed my diet, upped my exercise and am healthier than I have been in years. I don’t dwell on the MS as none of us know what’s round the corner- I might get hit by a bus next week so I can’t dwell on the MS. I am being as positive as I can and taking every day as it comes.

I hope you get some answers tomorrow and that it’s something straightforward they can fix, but if it is MS - and I hope it isn’t- there is lots of treatment options available to you x

Well .... it’s been a crazy day and I have been diagnosed as having a spinal stroke! Devastated! I’m only 37 and have 2 young children at home. I’ve been admitted to hospital and waiting for a lumbar puncture and more tests 😢

Wow YorkshirePud that sounds like a shock! Poor you! Hopefully now that they know what it is, they can sort out the right therapy and advice for you.

Tuesday40 · 19/08/2020 06:17

What a shock that must be for you, have lots of fluids after the LP to try and avoid the headache afterwards. I hope you get treatment soon and they don’t keep you in for long.

Honeywort · 19/08/2020 06:30

Flowers Hope you slept okay. Best wishes for today too x

Toddlerteaplease · 19/08/2020 06:43

I've had similar and it's MS.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/08/2020 06:45

Just read your update. Sounds scary. Hope you get well soon.

yorkshirepudgf · 19/08/2020 16:24

Thanks for the lovely messages. I had a further MRI scan last night and the consultant that I have seen this morning thinks it’s transverse myelitis rather than a spinal stroke! Kind of relieved it wasn’t a stroke as I managed to convince myself last night that I was going to die! It could be a one off episode or it could happen again or it could be MS. I’m being pumped full of steroids for the next few days to try and reduce the inflammation around my spine. Because they had given me blood thinning medication I can’t have the lumbar puncture until next week now and this should give them more info to make a proper diagnosis. I’m just mentally and physically worn out!

I bet, you must be exhausted. Hope you get a good nights sleep tonight and the steroids help the numbness go. May be worth asking if they used contrast in the MRI? I didn’t think/know I had previous episodes but the contrast mri found that I had. Not saying it is MS but if it is then it’s better to know as there is a big advantage to preventative treatment.

picklemewalnuts · 19/08/2020 22:41

Well, you seem to be getting excellent and thorough care OP, though it must still feel pretty scary. SmileThanks

picklemewalnuts · 19/08/2020 22:42

Sorry about the accidental smiley!
