LASIK laser eye surgery...

I'm booked to have laser eye surgery next week. I've just had my consultation with the doctor performing the surgery, I mentioned my dog and he said she can't sleep in my room or the living area for at least 2 weeks after I've had it done. I asked why and he said another patient got cat hair in her eye following surgery and the bacteria on the fur caused quite a nasty infection.

My problem is, my house is open plan so unless I build a wall in the next week, there is no way to keep her from the living area. She doesn't sleep in my bed and isn't allowed on the furniture, does anyone know why it's so important she doesn't stay in my room? She's 10 and has slept in my room in her own bed from being a puppy, so I'm quite concerned she won't settle elsewhere Sad

Oh that's very over the top. I've had LASIK and my dog sleeps on my bed.

I get they're being super cautious but I don't think you've anything to be concerned about provided you keep up with cleaning.

You're spot on, she won't settle AT ALL and will whine all night until you give in.

Good luck for the procedure. I was unlucky, I had the cornea wrinkle up afterwards and had to wear a contact lens for a few days but other than that no issues at all. 10 years later still 20/20 vision.

Also cat fur I believe is far lighter and more likely to float around than dog hair!

I'm planning on having a really deep clean the day before and just keeping on top of hoovering daily because we have carpet throughout.

I'm dreading having it done, but so looking forward to being able to see!

Ahhh I'd say don't go through it. I had a nightmare with it and lots of problems after. Sorry but just want to warn you.. It's not as simple (for everyone) as they make out. If you do go for it fingers crossed it goes well and you'll love your new vision xo

I've never thought to mention that before, but yes, we did have a cat hair issue under a flap, that had to be re-lifted and flushed.

How hairy is your dog? Do you want to risk a re-lift and flush?

SillyCow6 · 16/08/2020 23:07

I didnt have this issue but I was in a lot of pain for 3 days solid, couldnt open my eyes at all, and 8 years later I needed glasses again. Not to put you off but so you've heard the not so amazing stories!

She's a wirehaired terrier, her hair is quite short but it does get spread about if she's lay on something. She isn't allowed on the beds or furniture though, so I'm thinking if I don't lie on the floor with her or be lay near her beds (which I wouldn't anyway!) I should be fine.

Thank you for the advice on the not so great outcomes. I've researched for years before deciding to go ahead and I'm using a company with a lifetime guarantee. I know there are risks with anything but I 100% want to go ahead x

I had it done. No issues.

I'm a bit of a control freak so have sat and researched every possible outcome and compared percentages etc. I'm lucky that I'm local to a fantastic company who have actually corrected several family members and a couple of friends eyes, I feel like I'm in safe hands!

It's always good to get a variety of perspectives though, so thank you Smile
