I know the MMR Vaccine is a very touchy subject but I need some advice I'm in my mid 40's and I had a text from my Drs too say I was due an MMR Vaccine Boost so I went ahead and book appointment and had it done today I have told a couple people and they responded with WHY would you have that done you only have it as a baby which I did
Has anyone on here had a middle age MMR Booster?????

Nope

dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 20:11

You maybe didn't get any or only 1 MMRs as a child. I wouldn't have got one as it didn't exist at the time it would have been due and I'm 46

dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 20:15

MMR was introduced in the UK in 1988 at which point I would have been 15 so I wouldn't have got it. I got rubella jag, don't know if measles jab existed

escourtie · 10/08/2020 20:21

@dementedpixie I had both done as a child 1 at 1 and one at 3.5

What year were you born?

Rowanberries · 10/08/2020 20:22

It flags up on my medical records to offer a MMR to me due to the fact I only had 1 measles jab as a child. I actually had measles about age 7 or 8 and was really ill- unconscious for days. It's a disease that really scares me.

dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 20:23

Because if you were born before 1988 in the UK then MMR didn't exist

DonLewis · 10/08/2020 20:25

I have, but because I wasn't vaccinated as a child. (valid reason, medical advice at the time was that I shouldn't be MMR vaccinated). I started a new job in a university and there was talk of a measles outbreak so I asked my doctor about having it and they said it was fine. So I had it.

HeyBlaby · 10/08/2020 20:27

I had mine as a child and recall a booster early 20's (ish)

AnneLovesGilbert · 10/08/2020 20:33

I had the first dose as a teen before going travelling and they flagged up I’d missed the second one when I was pregnant in my 30s so I had the second after that.

TumbleBingQuack · 10/08/2020 20:35

I had one at the age of 30 because I'd only had one as a child and they discovered at my IVF clinic I wasn't immune to Rubella.

It was absolutely fine, no side effects at all.

Abraid2 · 10/08/2020 20:38

Sounds like a good idea. My daughter, 21, and with a full MMR history, caught mumps in spring from an unvaccinated student at university. Apparently it’s only 80% effective. She missed out on a job she wanted.

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 10/08/2020 20:38

DH had it and the GP system kept flagging me as needing it too (I was born abroad and had everything there, so in my case it was just because they had no record). I can't remember why it was, I think probably a combination of the combined MMR being new/ not existing yet and people having missed boosters due to the Wakefield nonsense? Might be wrong on the latter though, as that wasn't until the 1990s.
FWIW, I recently had a tetanus jab after a dog bite and the nurse said it wasn't possible to over vaccinate. Not sure if that applies to all vaccines though.

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 10/08/2020 20:39

And that is exactly why everyone should get vaccinated. So sorry to hear your DD missed out due to someone else's selfishness!

What's your issue OP... Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. R0 is like 15 or something bonkers.

escourtie · 10/08/2020 20:50

Ok so before the 3 in 1 one came in in 1989 were children given 3 seprate shots?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 20:51

I dont think there was a mumps vaccine. Measles was separate but uptake was low. Girls got rubella jab at school.

escourtie · 10/08/2020 20:53

@Mrsmorton Its not an Issue I was just asking wether it was normal too have the vaccine Booster in later life that was all you dont need too get Attitude

Nhs info says:

Anyone who has not had 2 doses of the MMR vaccine should ask their GP surgery for a vaccination appointment.

It's important to check if you've had both doses if you:

  • are about to start college or university
  • are going to travel abroad
  • are planning a pregnancy
  • are a frontline health or social care worker
  • were born between 1970 and 1979, as you may have only been vaccinated against measles
  • were born between 1980 and 1990, as you may not be protected against mumps

There wasn't a mumps vaccine according to this list

MMR Booster required in Adulthood
dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 21:01

Maybe they are running a catch up campaign so there isn't a measles outbreak during coronavirus

escourtie · 10/08/2020 21:02

@dementedpixie Thankyou so much

I had my rubella titre level checked prior to TTC and it was equivocal, so was given another MMR.

minniemoll · 10/08/2020 21:17

I had a measles jab in 1971 - it must have been a new thing then as there wasn't a printed line for in on my vaccination card, it's written in by hand underneath the rest. I had the rubella jab aged about 14 at school, and I actually caught mumps when I was about ten, so hopefully I'm immune to that now.
