Pins and needles in right arm - please help!

KipperFaced · 10/08/2020 16:20

I'm getting pins and needles in my right arm around 6 to 8 times a day. No pain, no loss of grip and it's not due to posture or leaning on it. It starts maybe just above my elbow, radiates down for 30 seconds or a minute and then goes away for a few hours or so. No other symptoms

What could it be? I wondered trapped nerve but I've got no pain in my arm at all.

Anyone?

Maybe keep a log of when it happens, where specifically and how long it lasts and if it is regular enough to concern you, ask a pharmacist or see/call a doctor.

It could be a trapped or pinched nerve. I've had that in the past and it was solved by having a sports massage. The therapist told me that tight muscles in my back were probably pressing on the nerve.

When I told the therapist where the pins and needles was, she knew where on my back to massage.

Only trouble is, you'll probably find it difficult/impossible to get a massage at the moment. A physio might be able to help?

Footle · 10/08/2020 22:04

You can get a massage in England as of a couple of weeks ago.

Have you been typing a lot or using the computer mouse or touch pad or texting on your phone more than usual? Sounds like repetitive strain injury.

WinterAndRoughWeather · 11/08/2020 00:39

I’d say RSI or carpal tunnel syndrome maybe. I got this a lot with carpal tunnel.

jessstan2 · 11/08/2020 00:49

It does sound like a trapped nerve. You can buy some NSAIDs over the counter which are worth a try and won't mess up your digestion short term. If they don't work, go to your GP for something stronger.

I am struggling with a very similar issue. At first I had just dizziness and an odd sensation at the back of my neck, and also some tingling and pins and needles in my arm.

This has now progressed to bad neck pain sometimes and arm pain and weakness.

My arm is so bad I'm having to use dictation instead of typing and I can't raise my arms above my waist without bringing on pain or dizziness or both.

I went to a physio and he gave me a deep tissue massage in my back but it made me feel like I've been beaten up, and it also made the original issue worse, so I'm too scared to go back now. Sorry, not much help

LimeLemonOrange · 11/08/2020 17:12

Ps For several weeks on and off I've also been unable to sit down as that triggered the symptoms in my neck and now arm.

Wellthatsit · 12/08/2020 09:08

Lime, could you describe the odd sensation in your neck?

LimeLemonOrange · 12/08/2020 11:33

It's hard to remember that sensation now but I think it was just a very mild tingle in the area, but it did eventually progressed to full on pain.

bestbefore · 12/08/2020 11:44

I had this - mine was very specific areas of pins and needles - down to my thumb. I had an mri and it was a disc pressing on the nerve - think it was c5 vertebrae - I had physio with manipulation (not for everyone!) but it worked. www.spine-health.com/conditions/neck-pain/cervical-radiculopathy-symptoms

If it doesn't work then one option is surgery 😱

aldibuyer · 12/08/2020 12:37

Are you working form home and have your laptop on a dining table?
I have the same, mine comes on in bed and is worse when I just get up then eases off. I have shoulder pain as well. I think I am sitting badly and my hands tend to be resting on the table so my shoulders are forced up. I have had carpal tunnel problems earlier in the year but either this has taken over or the tunnel one has got better. Of course it's simple - I need to change where I use my laptop, I need some self discipline but I fail. I am so daft I have the pain but do nothgin to stop it!

Dontsayyouloveme · 12/08/2020 22:21

Sounds like it’s coming from your neck.

mozzrules · 12/08/2020 22:28

Go and see your GP and get a proper diagnosis. Don't rely on strangers on the internet! There are all sorts of things it could be...

KipperFaced · 12/08/2020 23:05

Where on earth did I say I was relying on strangers on the internet to diagnose me? There was me thinking this was a chat board to .. you know, chat on

I had a telephone consult with my dr yesterday and she's sure it's a pinched nerve, despite there being no neck or shoulder pain at all. She's given me a link to some exercises so I've been doing those so will see how it goes. She says if no improvement in a few weeks then she'd look to refer to a physio

I'm actually seeing my McTimoney practitioner tomorrow evening (I book in once every few months for a treatment on my back as I het a sore back sometimes due to a twisted pelvis and he puts this back into place for me) so I'll be asking him to see if he's got any recommendations for me

I do work using my iPad or phone all day long in my right hand so I wonder if this is maybe catching up with me too

The reason I asked about the neck thing is because there is a condition called L'hermittes syndrome, but it doesn't sound like it's that, unless you got an electric shock sensation in your neck and spine. Hope things improve for you soon.

FlamingoPip · 23/11/2020 08:16

Hello! How is your pain? Wondering if you'd mind sharing your exercises? I am similarly suffering right now! Thanks
