Pretty sure I’ve been bitten by a horsefly?

It’s so hot and itchy! I’ve taken antihistamine and it’s made to difference. I always react badly to insect bites and I don’t want to be a drama queen but at what stage do I start worrying? The red area is almost the width of my (not insubstantial given being 28 weeks pregnant) thigh.

That looks painful! Could you speak to a pharmacist when they open? I have always found them to be really good when I'm unsure as to whether to make a fuss or not!

Given you're pregnant probably wouldn't hurt to call someone. But otherwise: oral antihistamine (my GP recommended a double dose of cetirizine hydrochloride when I have allergic reactions) as well as a topical antihistamine. I also find tiger balm (red or white) brilliant for bites.

I wouldn't worry unless the at home / over the counter treatment didn't work.

Try applying heat. As hot as you can bear without scolding yourself. It works miracles for me and my allergic reactions.

Vicks vaporub. Honestly it's brilliant for bites x

Sorry that should read: ‘it’s made no difference’

I’ve taken loratidine so will try popping a cetirizine as well.

I'd get someone to look at it to be on the safe side.

This is only what happened to me a good few years back but I was bitten by something during the night. Didn't think much of it and just put note cream etc on it but it got worse and worse and it looked like my flesh was being eaten away.

I went to GP and he said he thought it looked like a horsefly bite - (I have no idea how because I only had a small window open and a black-out blind but hey ho) - and that it was infected.

To cut a long story short, I ended up on three different types of antibiotics because nothing would clear it up and the 'hole' in my leg was getting deeper and deeper.
It took weeks to get under control and I still have a scar from it to this day.

I'd always err on the side of caution now.

*bite cream 🙄

islandislandisland · 09/08/2020 08:41

When I had a horsefly bite ice reduced the itching. It is horrible though, you have my sympathies!

I honestly don't think your GP will do anything at the moment. It's a bug bite, they hurt Grin unless you break out in a rash, have difficulty breathing etc, I'd just leave it. You'll likely be absolutely fine.

Oh I definitely wouldn’t go to the GP 😂
