What (other than pregnancy) could make a period 4 weeks late?

That's it really. Am normally regular as clockwork but last period should have come on 4 weeks ago. Have done 2 pregnancy tests, one 2 weeks ago and the other 1 week ago. Both were negative. Anyone have any ideas?

Occasionally, a cycle can just be skipped - due to not ovulating - and its perfectly normal. Happened to me years and years ago, and GP said it was just an anovulatory cycle and happens to nearly all women a few times during their fertile lifetime.

Thats one reason, anyway

Don't mean to worry you, but ectopic pregnancy? Am I right in thinking it might not show up straight away on a test or have I got that all mixed up?

FrannyandZombie · 02/10/2007 18:05

Elibean wouldn't the lining of the womb still be shed? I thought you could be anovulatory and not realise it.

I think my knowledge of this is a bit lacking!

small child and breast feeding?
probably not, but my periods returned after ds2 at 13mo, then at 16mo we went away and I fed him ALOT, I was just starting a period when we went away, my next two cycles were 8 weeks (having settled back down to my regular 5 weeks).

YeahBut · 02/10/2007 18:10

Nope, not breastfeeding. And with three young kids dp and I are not having lots of sex either which is why I'm sure I can't be pregnant. Is it worth bothering a GP about this?

I think having googled it I was wrong about the ectopic thing (still not entirely sure)

I think I would see the doctor if you didn't have your period in the next month.

BellaeCandelae · 02/10/2007 18:27

Ectopic would still give a positive pg test. Would also be painful by this stage, I thnk.

BUut i's quite normal to skip a period from time to time. It has only ever happened to me at times of stress. First time ever was during my A-levels, although a little worrying at first, I was glad not to have to cope with the discomfort while sitting exams. If you have anther period ithin, say1 month, and then normally, then no worries. Otherwise see your GP.

HorribleHorace · 02/10/2007 18:29

hormone imbalance? do you feel ok other than the missed period?

NAB3 · 02/10/2007 18:30

Stress?

silverfrog · 02/10/2007 18:31

It is possible to have an ectopic pregnancy and get a negative test result - depends on how sensitive the test was.

I tested negative with my ectopic, and didn't have many other symptoms either. Having said that, I didn't miss a period at all - in fact had the opposite and had a very prolonged period which was the only thing that prompted me to go to docs.

If you are uneasy at all, and there is even the slightest chance you could be pregnant, it might be best to get checked out

BellaBear · 02/10/2007 18:33

I'll second stress - I've missed two periods ever for no good reason, then it arrived the next month (or a month late iyswim)

TheDuchessOfCorpseBride · 02/10/2007 18:48

Well if it's deffo not surprise 4th DC then stress, sudden weight-loss or menopause .

No idea about the anovulatory thing - probably worth a chat with the GP.
