What are these lumps on my ankles??

Yesterday morning I noticed a swelling on each ankle, just below the ankle bone. They are squidgy to touch, not hot, not painful, in fact I wouldn't know they are there without looking. I was worried about deep vein thrombosis but NHS website suggests it would most likely be on one side only. I am overweight unfortunately but fairly active and walk most days. Trying to decide whether to bother with 111 or wait until Monday to ring the GP. Anyone ever had this?

Hi!
I found your post/pic while trying to find out what the same two fatty lumps on the outside of both of my ankles were!!!
I went to a foot surgeon today and he told me that they are called Hoke’s Tonsils. They are a fatty, fibrous plugs that plug up the Sinus Taris junction of the ankles. Apparently, the lumps contain important nerves. The Dr said under no circumstances to remove to lumps as you can easily ruin the major nerves of the ankle. The only time they ever remove the “plug” of fat is to do surgery inside the boney junction is for Sinus Tarsi Syndrome, even then, there’s a big chance of losing the feeling in your feet. Good Drs won’t touch these lumps, but some plastic surgeons will because they dont know or care. Good news, they are largely fatty, so if you lose weight, they will reduce in size as fat loss happens equally all over of the body. Technically, the Hoke’s Tonsils are considered herniated fat plugs. They are supposed to stay inside the Sinus Tarsi junction to protect it and not show. I rolled both my ankles which is what caused mine. Sprains or damage can also cause them to pop out. They grow bigger when you put on weight.

Foot and Ankle Surgeon.

Nothing to see here!

Subcutaneous swelling - either adipose, oedema or a combination of both.

If not painful and just in that one specific spot, suggest ignore.

If worried, or signs of swelling in the whole foot / leg recommend non urgent GP appointment.

Did you ever see your GP about this? Looks exactly like my ankles and one is much bigger than the other and I can't decide whether or not to worry yet. X
