Ds (17) fell over yesterday while running and grazed all of his left side.
I will see if i can post a picture to make it easier to explain better.

Have you put any antiseptic on it?

bizzey · 07/08/2020 22:43

Ohh it worked !!.
I always thought grazes need air to dry ,
But now i have read they need to be covered and creamed .
Ordered some pads to arrive tomorrow ( it is a make do face mask with tape in the picture!)
But is it ok that it looks so yuck ?
I have cleaned it again with off boiled salty water .
Any thing else i should do to prevent infection ?
Thabks

Ouch! Does it look clean or is it a bit gunky? Have you got a dressing big enough to,cover it tonight? It really needs to develop a clean dry scab, keep an eye out for infections, show it to a pharmacist if you are concerned. Personally I am anti creams etc, just something else for dirt to stick to.

I would initially wash with an antiseptic solution i.e. liquid savlon, then gently apply antiseptic cream (again savlon). When not doing anything expose to the air. Keep loosely covered with a dressing at other times. Change dressing daily. It should start healing & drying in a few days.

When DS did similar, we used lots of Sudocrem. It was quite weepy so for the first couple if nights we covered with cling film to stop it sticking to the bedclothes and let it air during the day. It healed quickly.

My daughter when younger had a nasty large graze on her cheek after a fall (scooter 🙄). The savlon routine above helped heal with no scarring.

Keep it clean. If any redness starts to spread out around it, get to the Dr as can be a sign of infection.

I would dress that with jelonet - you can buy it over the counter at pharmacies and its great for healing up manky wounds.

My dd recently had 2 very nasty knee grazes. They did become very wet and sloughy (yellow gunk).. I did show to gp and ended up in and e after 4 days (mainly to assess for fracture). But she did get a proper dressing for it there as it was so oozey - they put some specialised dressing on it to draw all the slough off and help it heal underneath. Before that we had managed with dry dressings and salt water washing. The gp did prescribe antibiotics but I got impression a and e Dr thought this was a bit ott! Anyway all health professionals were very helpful so if you are worried about infection do seek advice.

Clean it and let it dry out. I wouldn’t dress unless I had to- ie for sleep comfort.

Thank you all for replying .
His knee , elbow and palm ( yes he did the full works !) Are dry / dried, but this is still " wet / leaky .
My first aid cabinet is not what it use to be for cuts and things like when they were younger.
Shall i do savlon and cut to measure face mask ( with tape ) or the cling film ?

I can stock up tomorrow, but he is going camping next week and want to get on top of this before he goes.
Thank you again.

Google hydrocolloid plasters. Available at Boots etc and specifically for this kind of graze

Timeforanotherusername · 07/08/2020 23:03

My DS had a nasty graze recently with lots of grit in it.

I just kept it as clean as possible. I don't even think I got all the grit out. I bathed it in Dettol and put savlon on.

Plaster for a day or so but I don't like to use a plaster for long at all.

It did heal very quickly.

cautiouscovidity · 07/08/2020 23:03

The cling film is good as it doesn't stick to the wound. Put it on overnight (put some antiseptic cream on underneath) and remove to gently clean and air the wound in the morning. Tape the cling film well away from the graze with micropore tape.

Go to boots pharmacy they have large dressings behind the counter a lot cheaper than packaged ones.
Get ds to go and talk to the pharmacist and show the area
