Indentation in breast?

Lubilu28 · 06/08/2020 14:52

Around 6 years ago I lost around 5st and afterwards noticed a dent in my right breast. I put it down to losing all the weight and I’ve avoided getting it checked out probably due to fear of the worse.

This morning I read an article about how a woman who had a slight dent ended up with breast cancer! My dent is very noticeable and now I’m starting to really worry. I’ve tried to get an appointment today but couldn’t so I’m going to call again tomorrow morning to get booked in. I’m really nervous but has anyone had a dent and turned out to be nothing? I can’t help but think how stupid I’ve been to not get seen sooner Blush

There is nothing you can do now other than just make sure you get a GP appointment tomorrow. Explain why over the phone and ensure they know it is urgent.

Please, although I know it's difficult, try not to get yourself worked up and stop googling c

Well it is possibly due to the weight loss meaning that you have lost the sub cutaneous fat on your breasts, and that the natural lumpiness of the tissue underneath is noticeable as a dip there, but you really need an ultrasound . Please see your GP.
I know how frightening it is, I have had two lumps that needed checking, all was fine. My consultant said that almost all of the news he gives is good news, so try not to panic. You will feel much happier once it has been checked.

theconstantinoplegardener · 06/08/2020 15:01

Has the dent got deeper/wider over the five years? Do you have any lumps in the affected breast, or enlarged glands in the right armpit? If it's been there the whole time, I suspect it may just be dimpling of the fat (I have a dent on my arm). But still, best to get it checked out by your GP - best of luck Flowers

Literally just read similar on the Daily Fail website!!

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8599441/Mother-reveals-small-dent-dismissed-stretch-mark-turned-breast-cancer.html

Ewwww I feel so dirty linking to the DM. Sad but knowledge is power xx

Hope this info helps in some way? Flowers

Highlandshortbread · 06/08/2020 15:17

Oh This is the article you read earlier!

Oh no! I am such a pleb xx Flowers sorry

Lubilu28 · 06/08/2020 15:24

highlandshortbread yer that’s what I read! Being daily fail I did think, meh what a load of tosh but then the googling started 😳

I’m not going to do that again lol

theconstantinoplegardener no lumps and had a good look round both breasts and there are multiple indentations! Not sure if they are new as some a very slight. X

I think you are seeing the breast tissue due to fat loss, but as I said above, get an ultrasound to make sure.

Lubilu28 · 07/08/2020 21:33

So I’ve been to the drs today and where the indention is she felt an abnormal lumpy bit!

She said she wasn’t concerned, due to my age (31) but referred me anyway just so it will help clear my head. But since she said she felt something it has made me worry more.

I have lumpy feeling breasts, so really, try not to worry. My best friend had two lumps biopsied last year, both were just completely benign fatty lumps that are common in breasts.
Most breast lumps are not cancer.

HipHopBanzai · 07/08/2020 21:42

GP referred me to the breast clinic with something that looked identical to the picture in the DM article.
Consultant at the clinic was pretty sure it wasn't anything sinister and this was confirmed by ultrasound and mammogram.
I was convinced it was something awful because I couldn't find anything positive online. Hope you have the same outcome as me.

Wolfiefan · 07/08/2020 21:45

I too have lumpy boobs. I only found out when I lost weight and was referred to a breast clinic. They saw me within two weeks and confirmed that I’m just lumpy. Blush
It is very likely that you’re only noticing this (which has long been there) due to weight loss and it’s nothing sinister at all.
But always best to be checked.
Good luck OP.

goose1964 · 07/08/2020 23:12

My mum had a dent as her first sign of breast cancer. I developed something similar but mine was caused by shrinking milk ducts. Don't panic but get it checked.

Worriedoncemore · 08/08/2020 23:14

I too have found a small dent in my left breast. Found it a week or so ago while on holiday (mirror at different angle to one at home and light was shining right on it). No idea if it had been there before.
Like woman in article I dismissed it as a stretch mark as I do have a number of these across both breasts (feint white lines) possibly due to losing 2 stone 3 years ago and they can look dimply under certain lights. There actually is one right where the dent is which also has a tiny purple blue blemish next to it which seems to highlight it iykwim! Therefore I didn't worry.

However, for some reason today I spotted it again after shower ( light was in right position), googled, found DM article, now scared shitless!

I was supposed to have routine mammogram in March (am over 50) but got cancelled due to Covid. Can I insist they carry it out now I have a concern??

I did have surgery to remove & drain a breast absess caused by breastfeeding 15 years ago in the same area so wonder if it's related as it's just above the incision scar so perhaps it's always been there & I didn't notice as so small & can only be seen in certain lights?!

Watching replies with interest....

opentheblinds · 08/08/2020 23:28

Worriedoncemore - your gp should still be able to refer you under 2week wait (or whatever the Covid era substitute is in your area). Best to get it checked out but don’t panic. Could well be related to your previous surgery.

Worriedoncemore · 09/08/2020 07:52

Will phone gp in morning - from their website they are not encouraging this and want you to do online chat with them, but what the hell, I'm worried! Really hope they'll see me & not fob me off due to Covid!

Incidentally, from that photo, the woman's skin looks quite orange peel like, which is what they tell you to look for rather than dents - mine doesn't which I'm hoping is a good sign, although my dent looks similar to hers when I raise my arm.

TheProvincialLady · 09/08/2020 08:04

If this dent appeared 6 years ago it is very, very unlikely to be anything sinister. You would have noticed other symptoms long before now. You are absolutely right to get checked out but try not to worry.

Grrrpredictivetex · 09/08/2020 10:25

As a previous breast cancer sufferer (stage 3), I would definitely insist on seeing your dr and getting an ultra sound in place ( I'd had a mammogram a yet previously and nothing was found). The fall out from Covid will definitely have a knock on effect with possible cancer diagnosis's. Please see somebody and emphasise the urgency. Don't be fobbed off. I ended going for a private diagnosis as couldn't wait for two plus week wait in NHS, best money I've ever spent, although my dr there went on to be my surgeon later within the NHS. It's scary I know but best to get it sorted and may turn out to be nothing.
Good luck to you all.

Mvshrln · 10/08/2020 10:56

Bear in mind articles on the Daily Mail (and a lot of the internet) are sensationalised and don't contain all the facts . But, it's good to get checked and to be aware of all of the symptoms. Places are still doing health checks so even if you do have a telephone appointment they can still refer you to the breast clinic for checks as they are still operating. Fingers crossed for you :)

Worriedoncemore · 10/08/2020 20:32

I phoned the gp this morning and was phoned back this afternoon and asked to describe the dent which wasn't too successful so wthin the hour I was in her office. She saw the dent straightaway and after a good feel around said she couldn't feel anything untoward. She said she's not worried but has referred me under 2 week wait to be sure. Feel reassured and worried at the same time but at least I'll know within the fortnightHmm

Wolfiefan · 11/08/2020 08:35

Good luck with the appointment. It’s very very likely nothing to worry about but at least if it’s been checked then you can have some peace of mind.

Worriedoncemore · 24/08/2020 08:13

Any update OP?

I had my breast clinic appointment. They did a mammogram and ultrasound which showed no lumps or masses. They did notice some tissue distortion in the area of the dent, which is the same area that I had surgery for a breast absess some 16 years ago. They said the tissue damage could be consistent with the surgery but want to compare with my last mammogram to ensure no changes, with a view to doing a biopsy if so. I'm now pretty sure I've seen the dent before over the years, just not recently as it's only visible in certain lights, and assumed it was due to the surgery.

Still a bit worried but reassuring they're being so thorough.

Hope all ok OP?

Lubilu28 · 24/08/2020 12:24

Worriedoncemore I went to the breast clinic on Thursday. I was expecting to be there a few hours but was out within 10 mins. She felt me up but couldn’t feel anything and just told me to keep an eye out for any changes.

I was hoping for a ultrasound at least just so I can see for sure but she is the expert in this field so I’ve took her word for it!

Glad yours is nothing sinister too.

Glad your appointment went okay :) yes, good idea to trust the experts :) xx

Worriedoncemore · 24/08/2020 13:02

@24Lubilu28 glad all went well for you. I was only there just over an hour after being told to allow 3! They were very quick and managed to fit mammogram, ultrasound and 2 conversations with doctor in that time with minimal waiting around. There were only 4 other women there. My memory from going there years ago with the abcess was of it being packed and being there for hours! Rather worrying if it means people are not going because of Covid Confused
