How to get rid off mucous plugs in lungs?

38 replies

Sadly I suffer from rare lung disease which causes accumulating hard thick mucous plugs in my lungs.
It literally impossible to cough anything our ever!
Anyone knows what worked for them?
My last resort would be High dose of Steroids but I want to try anything else before if possible.

Exputex is great also and available over the counter

If you're open to herbs perhaps try Fenugreek. It helps expel mucus. It certainly helps me when I have colds or chest infections.

www.blf.org.uk/support-for-you/bronchiectasis/treatment

I found the breathing / coughing exercises on this website helpful.

I think that advice, however kindly intended, from people without lung disease is of limited help. Benelyn certainly won't cut it. I've found that, other than prednisolone, only a salbutamol nebuliser will clear that level of mucus, and possibly antibiotics if your doctor suspects infection (coloured or green mucus).

I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis last year after years of coughing. I take carbocisteine which is supposed to thin the mucous though I don't think it does much. The most life changing thing has been chest clearance exercises. Google "active cycle of breathing "
I do this every day at the same time, more if needed. Try using salbutamol half an hour before. I also do the breathing lying down but sit up to cough.
I agree with onlinelinda that cough medicine won't help.

When I was recovering from pneumonia I ate pineapple each day (not tons) as the bromelein (or however it's spelled) helps to break down mucus and strengthen lungs.

Or you can drink fresh pineapple juice for the same effect.

Hello, thanks everyone.
I saw my Dr on Friday.
I was giving Prednisolone for 5 days, this usually helps me to cough cough up all but not working at all this time.
I think I I had Benylin before, the same ingredient Guaifesin is in Robutussin, did nothing for me.
I also had Carbocisteine in liquid, but that made me wheezing so I stopped it after month as no result.
I am so desperate to get the junk out!
It rattles inside me.
The nurse said it’s just thick plugs inside me making the noise.
So I need desperately get them out as make me noisy chest like a cat purring inside me.

Can you request to see a respiratory physio. They can teach you chest clearance excercises.
But you have to be consistent 2 times a good 20-30 minute session a day at minimum 3/4 if you are having a flare up.
Autogenic drainage techniques, using you pep device and hyper tonic saline plus regular ( daily) cardio excercise will help keep your chest clear.
But it really is a lot of work there is no magic bullet consistency is key.

Hiddennameforever · 11/08/2020 11:32

@umberellaonesie I had that 3 years ago.
It did nothing for me at all sadly.
The only thing ever worked was the Prednisolone course, but that not working either this time at all.

Saline Nebs followed by huffing/physio in the shower? Or have you tried bouncing on an exercise ball, again after a neb?

@IkaBaar

Saline Nebs followed by huffing/physio in the shower? Or have you tried bouncing on an exercise ball, again after a neb?
So you have been consistently doing chest physio daily for 3 years?
Hiddennameforever · 11/08/2020 14:55

@umberellaonesie
No.
I had no symptoms for almost 3 years.
I have a regular flare up every 3 years.
It just all started last month.

You will probably find a regular physio regime between flare ups will reduce the severity as there will be less build up. So probably worth speaking to the physio's for a regular daily regime Hope you find something that helps with this one.
