Haemoglobin low, how bad?

Well I went to give blood today, I last went in March and all was good, today though they had to pop my blood into the machine and it came out measuring 94hb. I know its low and I've had borderline anemia before for a very short while but dont think its ever been that low.
The nurse was quite insistent that I speak to a doctor asap, always happens on a friday!
Bit worried now but hoping it's just iron tablets that will fix me up, I dont feel ill, work full time and have done during most of lockdown, obviously a bit tired as I'm a single mum and have a house to run by myself too but nothing out the ordinary, I sleep well too, rarely struggle to fall asleep or wake.
Anyone else been as low as that and what was the outcome?

@chocdonuty do you mean your hb was 9.4 ?

paniquer · 02/08/2020 15:20

It's not great but some iron supplements would fix it in a few weeks. If it was less 8 then you would be looking for a transfusion rather than donating.

Normal range for haemoglobin in women is 115-165 g/L, so 94 is fairly low. It is worth seeing a doctor as you'll need some other tests to find out what's most likely to to be causing your anaemia.

Katharinablum · 03/08/2020 09:28

Agree that you may need further investigations to confirm what the cause is. If you are still of childbearing age and have heavy periods, that may be the cause of your anaemia. - it was in my case and a course of iron sorted it out.
You may have to provide a stool sample to check for hidden blood from bleeding within your gut. They may well ask for another blood test to check ferritin, folate and b12 levels. Those are initial investigations. At some point depending on results you may need a scope (a small camera) to have a look for an ulcer etc
I felt really ill at the time and couldn't understand why - no energy, no endurance, legs felt like lead ! When I discovered I was anaemic it all fell into place. My hb was a bit higher than yours (104) but my ferritin was 5 (v low) so you must feel pretty rubbish !

It's quite low but not super low. They will want to find out why it's low but I wouldn't think it's a cause for concern. You might be given iron injections initially. I have a history of anemia. The lowest my hb levels ever dropped to were 7.2 albeit I was very ill at the time. The dr commented to me," How are you still walking around with iron levels that low"?

SirTobyBelch · 03/08/2020 13:14

The lowest my hb levels ever dropped to were 7.2

7.2 g/dL, i.e. 72 g/L.

It's unhelpful when people quote numbers without units as the OP might end up comparing her level of 94 (g/L) with yours of 7.2 (g/dL), when if expressed in the same units yours would be 72.

Blood haemoglobin concentrations have been reported in g/L rather than g/dL in the UK for the last 6 years.

Well I managed to get a blood test today as they had a cancellation, just got to wait for the results now. They usually appear on the app before the doctor contacts me which I'm not sure is a good thing Hmm
I agree about the figures mine were g/L when previously they were g/dL but on the app (patient access) the graph of previous results makes the oldest result look way out!
I have been tested before in the past but always been the low end of normal but nothing to worry about.
