Given myself too much insulin

So I've been a T1 diabetic since I was 4, I'm now early 40's
Never have I mixed up my day time and night time insulin
Tonight after about 3 nights of barely sleeping I've just gone to take my night time dose and I've used my day time pen!!!
On a daily basis I take about 4 units after each meal and night time dose is 14 units

Therefore I've now taken over 3x my daily one dose.
Can't believe after all these years I've mixed them up, no lucozade in the house so just made a jug of squash, hot water and a load of sugar to hopefully counteract it.
I'm now too scared to go to sleep just in case

Ring 111

Sycamoretrees · 28/07/2020 01:27

Sounds like you need medical advice, give 111 a call.

Blueblue26 · 28/07/2020 01:32

I was a bit high blood sugar wise to start with so was going to give myself a couple of units fast acting insulin then my night time dose
Due to tiredness I mixed them up Confused
I've drank quite a bit of the juice I made up and tbh I don't think there's much 111 will do
Just a bit scared as never done this before and feel a bit stupid

They may be able to offer you reassurance, and can check your logic in case you're not thinking clearly.

Namenic · 28/07/2020 01:39

If u cannot get an answer, I would go to A&E. u would probably need observation and regular blood sugar tests.

Isadora2007 · 28/07/2020 01:45

Can you recheck your blood sugars?

Namenic · 28/07/2020 01:47

It would probably be safer to go to hospital if in doubt. As long-acting insulin can take a while to kick in.

Number3or4 · 28/07/2020 01:51

Eat your hypo stach. Have you done dafne course or equivalent? Over treating is better than under treating in my mind. Do you have family or friend that can check you overnight? I would also eat some biscuits or any other long acting carbohydrates.

If you feel unable or uncertain that you can treat the accidental overdose then call 111 or 999.

Number3or4 · 28/07/2020 02:03

Do you use novoRapid? Because my doctor told me they can remain active for 4hours after it enters the body. So check in 2hr and then again in 4hr. Not to mention when or if you get hypo symptoms. I read some of the new insulin works much faster so do be extra careful overnight.

SimplySteveRedux · 28/07/2020 02:09

DP is a T1, do you have any glucogel or glucagon? What kind of insulin?

compulsiveliar2019 · 28/07/2020 02:09

R I on your own Op? I would definitely ring 111 for advice. I used to work for them and I've known people sent to hospital in your situation and I have also (sorry I don't mean to scare you) known or cases where people have lost consciousness whilst on the phone to 111 and an ambulance on blue lights sent.
I would ring but if you really don't feel you need to AND you are not on your own then get someone to wake you in an hour or two to check your levels. But please if your on your own don't take the chance.

managedmis · 28/07/2020 02:10

Er, you need to phone for assistance please

Splitsunrise · 28/07/2020 02:11

Yes I would call 111. I’m no expert on diabetics though so no other advice from me other than to get medical advice!

SimplySteveRedux · 28/07/2020 02:14

You're going to crash quite soon, what are your hypo's like and do you get any telltale warning signs?

To be perfectly honest, if you have nobody there to keep an eye on you, and you lack experience of hypoglycaemia, you need to call 999 for an ambulance immediately. Hypoglycaemia can kill.

eggofmantumbi · 28/07/2020 02:16

Hi OP, fellow T1 here.

How much would your basal normally be? How much did you take?

If I were you I'd be seeing an alarm for every couple of hours (maybe even 90 minutes) to check and eat. You're going to have a rough 24 hours but once you're through the night you'll be fine.

Shitty disease x

eggofmantumbi · 28/07/2020 02:20

Hang on I've just reread your OP.
you've taken 14 bolus instead of 4- just eat eat eat. You'll be fine. Lots of carbs (so yes juice was a good idea but you're going to want a bit more- toast, cereal?) What time did you eat? Remember if it's bolus you've over done it'll be finished 4 hours absolute maximum.

Let us know you're ok x

Silvercatowner · 28/07/2020 07:07

Wife of a T1 here. Do what @eggofmantumbi says, especially the checking every 90 mins. It is, indeed, a shit disease.
