mild viral disease

no relationship to cow foot and mouth

spots on han, feet and in mouth, raised temp .. all gone in a few days

spreads like wildfire though

beansmum · 14/10/2004 15:58

so i shouldn't be too worried then? the child who has it isn't at nursery today but has been in this week, bean is kept away from the other kids most of the time though since he is by far the youngest.

fact sheet here

when DS had it we only noticed the little spots .. no other symptoms

Amfs · 14/10/2004 15:59

sorry, cross-posted

no don't worry .. its one of things he's bound to get at some stage or other

Amfs · 14/10/2004 15:59

DS had it at under a year old BTW

My dd had it a few weeks ago and suffered dreadfully with blisters in her mouth, as well as her hands, knees, feet, bottom. It took a week to clear up. By some miracle, my 14 month old ds who had been agressively kissing dd in th early stages (to make her better I think) didn't come down with it but 2 other children at preschool got it in quick succession.

well i haven't noticed anything so far, fingers crossed. bean hasn't been in contact with the child since monday so he would have shown some signs by now if he had caught it wouldn't he? hopefully i'm just worrying about nothing. although the child was at nursery on wednesday when bean was off, so could have given it to someone else.

I had it, so did dd and dp. I had terrible mouth ulcers for months - went back and to from docs a couple of times. Finally saw white spots on dd's tongue too and took her in and that's when they said it was HFM. She seemed to suffer no ill-effects at all.

I was prescribed some yuksome gel thing, like uhu with bits in it to paste on my tongue. That did the trick!

Apparently there's no real treatment for the actual virus that causes it. And it's VERY common!

codswallop · 14/10/2004 17:12

yes loody awful
often diagnosed as thrush first of all

californiagirl · 14/10/2004 17:53

Every child in DDs room just had it. She had a fever for two days
(only high once), spots all over, blisters on hands and feet, wouldn't eat solid food (she's 7 months), and was cranky for three days. But she hardly looked sick at all.
