Rubbish Kidneys Support Thread

Inspired by chatting to a couple of other posters on different threads, I thought I would start a group for anyone struggling with kidney failure, dialysis or after a transplant.

Kidney Disease is a massive problem in the U.K, but in my experience, when you say you have it, people don’t really understand what it means.

Personally, I have kidney failure, an eGFR around 20, and am expected to need dialysis or a transplant anytime from now really, although hoping I can hang on a bit longer.
Excuse me if I am a bit vague about some of the details as some are quite identifying.

Physically, I often feel absolutely fine, but on bad days am exhausted, dizzy, and my brain feels foggy. I bruise like a peach and my eye bags are horrendous, but I generally look ok which is why it is so hard for people to understand the illness. I work, exercise, act (mostly Grin) normal!

The mental side is worse though. Waiting for the thing to happen that I feel means the end of the world but might not be. Fearing every blood test being worse than before, dreading the day I have to have dialysis. Dreading what that might mean for me and my family.
I don’t have anyone suitable, or offering to give me a kidney, and I feel so deeply uncomfortable about friends thinking I might be after theirs when I mention my illness.
I also feel so sad that my only hope is someone else’s tragedy (from a desceased donor) and this pains me mentally and makes me feel like a terrible person. I also know a transplant isn’t a cure all and comes with it’s own issues.
I just wish my kidneys worked!!
I wake up in the morning and forget for a second, before remembering and my heart sinks.

BUT!!!
Kidney failure has made me appreciate life in a way I never would before. I do not sweat the small stuff which is a lovely release.
Knowing about it has allowed us to plan, so financially we should be just about ok, and it won’t come as a huge shock when it all kicks off.

I would love to hear from anyone going through this, or anyone who has and can speak from experience of dialysis or a transplant. Feel free to rant a bit but also hopefully some positive stuff.

I am rubbish at checking threads but will try to come back to this one, even if no one else joins, it might serve as a nice resource for others to know they are not alone.

So...if you are renally challenged, welcome!!

On another note, I am getting wound up on the pig heart transplant thread. So many sanctimonious people saying “well I wouldn’t have a transplant anyway”. Love how easy it is for them to say that when they don’t need one Angry
I’ve hidden it now!!

Thanks for all your replies, I feel a bit more relaxed now ! Obviously a lot of you have more severe problems. I wish you well

OrganTransplant123 · 12/01/2022 11:14

The stent removal was absolutely fine @queenofwobbles honestly! It took seconds.

I haven’t seen that thread @SandysMam but I hate transplant threads anyway. There is always someone sanctimonious who declares that they’d never consider a transplant, very easy to say when you are not in need of one and then other people with ridiculous ideas they’ve got from watching Casualty or some film where it looks as though an accident victim gets rushed in and the person in the next bed gets their heart within 15 minutes of arrival. It’s not good for my blood pressure!

Really glad to hear your good news @PineappleSun relax now and enjoy your baby!

SandysMam · 12/01/2022 11:41

@OrganTransplant123 ha ha yes, my favourite is Tracy Barlow in Coronation Street, her transplant is never mentioned!!!
I did love the film last Christmas though, no spoilers in case you haven’t seen it (although probably given it away now!!).

OP posts:
queenofwobbles · 12/01/2022 12:45

Thanks @OrganTransplant123 I will hold you to that! I love following your posts especially since I am relying on the list too. I have got my work up done so now just waiting to be activated I guess. Not sure where exactly my numbers are - Its too triggering where as if I just focus on my health I obsess much less about it all.

@SandysMam get that bag packed! Also yes to Tracy Barlows never ending kidney! Also lets not forget Carla and also Peter who got TWO offers of a liver in next to no time - they never mention or seem to take any meds for it! Wish I lived on Coronation st!

MissKittyFantastico84 · 12/01/2022 13:54

Bring on the pig kidneys I say! GrinGrin

SandysMam · 12/01/2022 18:16

Ha ha yes Kitty!! I will take what I can get!!

Sorry for derailing thread but need some advice to calm me down! I had acute renal failure years ago all resolved thank god. But my latest urine sample (acr) has shown very high abnormal levels. Is it possible that the bloods tests I’m waiting could come back normal and the urine test be inaccurate? Thanks

SandysMam · 22/01/2022 11:46

Hi @Overandabove1 I’ve no idea sorry! What did the Doctor say? Hope it all works out ok for you, try not to panic.

AdditionalCharacter · 28/01/2022 13:38

How were your results @Overandabove1? Hope they went well.

Sorry for my absence and lack of support. I've partly had my head buried in the sand, and partly been sleeping every chance I get.

Had my three monthly check up yesterday, and my little flicker of hope was extinguished. My tumour hasn't shrunk like we had hoped. Feeling so deflated about it all.

I have a constant dull ache on my right side, my consultant didn't seem too concerned but wasn't forthcoming as what to do with it, or how to stop it. I feel like I'm in a constant fog, taking codeine barely touches it. I'm masking the pain at work, I can't leave my job, I love my job, but thinking I should look for something that doesn't involve stretching. Maybe a lab rat.

I can't speak to DH about it as he just panics as soon as I mention any sort of pain. I have a GP appointment next week, albeit a phone consultation. I was hoping to have a f2f so that they can have a feel of my stomach/side and see if there is anything else there. I'm not even sure if it is kidney pain, it's definitely in the same area, but might be my mind playing tricks, I'm sure it gets slightly worse if I eat. I've had my gallbladder removed so def not that.

queenofwobbles · 29/01/2022 14:47

Hi Additional so sorry to hear this. Kidney pain is the worst as is fretting about work! Sorry if I have missed this in the thread - Is it just the one kidney affected? Definitely push it with the GP / hospital. Really feel for you, hope you are taking it easy Brew Cake

FuzzyPuffling · 29/01/2022 21:51

Hello all. Sorry I've been a bad kidney-friend lately. My cardiac problems have sort of taken over. I wish someone would join up the dots of my various incapacities.

But it's so good to hear all your news, which sounds mostly positive ( not in the covid sense) and you're all doing well...or ploughing on, which is almost as good.

I'm sure I was due a kidney function test last month, but no one seems to care!

AdditionalCharacter · 29/01/2022 22:18

Thanks @queenofwobbles. It's both kidneys, right one is the worst though.

Have had a lovely night out with DH tonight and forgot my problems for a little bit.

SandysMam · 30/01/2022 21:00

Hi everyone, hope you’re all doing ok!
@AdditionalCharacter I’m so sorry to hear that, as rubbish as my kidneys (or lack of!) made me feel, I never really had any pain so I can imagine it must really grind you down. I know what you mean about masking too, I was like that with tiredness, I just used to try to pretend I felt fine when really every day was like walking through treacle.
Is the long term plan to remove the worst affected kidney do you think? Glad you had a nice night out xx

@FuzzyPuffling this thread is good for a multi organ moan so if you need to rant about your ticker you will still be most welcome!

I’m still doing good on the dialysis, went for a lovely long walk in the sunshine today, felt fabulous. Whatever happens tomorrow, today was nice Smile

How are you doing @queenofwobbles? Hopefully still holding steady for now.

ShinyHatStand · 31/01/2022 08:13

Hi @AdditionalCharacter
So sorry that the kidneys are not doing what they were told. Naughty fuckers. Let me know if I need to have a word!

I'm still doing well. Struggling with balance atm between work, family, exercise, etc. I've also been trying to get the house back in order after 5 years of virtual neglect and I think adding that to the mix was just a step too far. But at least we have nice new carpets and bathrooms. And I'm single handedly keeping out local tip in business 😁

Take care all.

SandysMam · 31/01/2022 11:12

I feel exactly the same @ShinyHatStand trying to make up for past “failings” now I am feeling so much better on dialysis that I can be guilty of over doing it. I need to find some balance too.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/02/2022 08:05

Thank you sandysmam. I often feel like a bit of a fraud on here as my kidneys are so much better than most of you...a mere stage 3! I just wish someone ( anyone) would join up the dots of my health issues and make some educated guesses about what's going on
I had hopes of my rheumatologist but I've heard nothing at all from her for 13 months. ( Sad face)

All medics say " yep, you've got problems, but they aren't bad enough for me to be concerned about ( never mind about you!) so off you trot. And we know nothing about any other bit of you that's not behaving"

Rant over!

Happy February, everyone!

FuzzyPuffling · 01/02/2022 08:07

But talking house stuff, I have a fabulous new kitchen/ diner and have painted a couple of bedrooms. Feeling fortunate.

AdditionalCharacter · 01/02/2022 23:43

Sounds a bit like my consultant @FuzzyPuffling. His usual line is "Oh you have pain, shame we can't do anything really for kidney pain, see you in three months".

I suspect my GP already thinks I'm a drug seeker, will have fun speaking to her Friday. My fave GP has left the surgery and they won't tell me where she has moved to as I'd move to her surgery, she knows everything about my medical history and I don't have to repeat everything.

If I only had tumours on one kidney, they'd have removed it, but as I've got them on both, they won't as it then halves my kidney function, which is borderline as it is. So eventually I will lose a kidney, but then it'll be dialysis if I don't get a new kidney, so they're staying put at the moment.

It's a waiting game, one which I don't feel like I'm winning mentally or physically. I love my job, I worked hard to get where I am, I don't want to have to leave it because of this stupid kidney.

Anyway...glad to hear others are doing well on here. It's always uplifting to hear the positives.

FuzzyPuffling · 02/02/2022 16:51

"Oh you have pain, shame we can't do anything really for kidney pain, see you in three months".

Are you ever tempted to boot him in his kidneys and then see if he has a remedy? (Not really of course)

AdditionalCharacter · 02/02/2022 19:32

Every time I see him!

ShinyHatStand · 03/02/2022 08:42

I've taken up running so if you need someone to do some kidney booting before making a somewhat speedy getaway then let me know 😂

FuzzyPuffling · 03/02/2022 17:05

I could distract him by yelling "LOOK, OVER THERE!!!!" and pointing to the sky/a handy cupboard while shiny boots and runs,

AdditionalCharacter · 04/02/2022 17:55

I definitely need a runner, the most I could manage would be a brisk walk Grin
