Long term bladder problems - what to do ?

I’m sick of it now . First big episode of urine retention at age 21 in 2012 although hospital thought I’d had it chronic for years . Repeated episodes over 5 years . Tests showed structural problems with bladder, urethra and very little nerve function .

Apparently there’s no reason for it, diagnosis, cure or treatment - and as urologist said, being under 30 and female it’s highly unusual, likely lifelong . Only sort of clue is that my cousin is exactly the same; and now has a suprapubic catheter with a view to a more permanent solution eventually . GP muttered a bit about spinal nerve stimulation but said unlikely NHS will do that .

Hospital barely ever see me, usually once every two or three years, and GP says she doesn’t have the knowledge to help . I have a specialist nurse but I’ve seen her once in four years for the ten minutes of self catheter training, and can’t self refer .

GP said to self catheterise as needed - but didn’t have an answer as to when that is . I very rarely if ever need to pee - when I do it’s very painful . So don’t know when I’m needing to cath .

Am sore tonight across bladder, struggling to pee, failed to get a catheter in and just fed up with it all now . I have managed to pass a bit so don’t need to get help or anything but just so down about it . GP surgery don’t do much about it, just say persevere ... but I’m not sure if I can . I keep thinking I should ask for an appointment with the hospital again, but worried they’ll think I’m making an unnecessary fuss .

Well I can't really help on this but I don't think that you're making an unnecessary fuss!
If it's affecting you then it's important
I think you should go to the doctors again and ask for a referral to a specialist

Thank you . I’ve just had enough of it . If it were anything else they’d surely try to find out what’s wrong . GP said it’s a case of getting used to it, but I’m sure that’s not the case ... even the day they taught me to self catheterise the doctor said it was a temporary solution and they’d get it sorted . That was in 2016 and I’m still being told to self catheterise now - difference is they’re now saying it’s something I’ll need to do for the rest of my life . I’m not sure how to handle that at all.

Hi I have no words of encouragement but it's looking like I too, will have life long bladder problems so you have my sympathy.
It's a horrible thing and people just can't seem to help x

I’m so sorry you’re in the same boat Flowers, it really is shit . It’s almost as if there isn’t NHS help at all, they always say they don’t know what to suggest or do . It’s painful too, I’m scared to take pain meds as have been dependent on codeine before but it’s so sore when I need to pee .

I’m desperately trying to lose weight as cousin saying a suprapubic is much better . Probably not risk free time though .

Omg bless you, you poor thing. My daughter who is 20 has been suffering since she was 13 and still there are no answers. We have taken her to see a urologist on private healthcare but they still can’t do anything. Like you my daughter has learned to live with it. She can’t touch alcohol or any fizzy drink. Let’s just hope that with medicine advancing they will find an answer. So sorry to hear this xx

FirstTimeMother88 · 16/07/2020 19:16

I'm so sorry to hear that :( does she have a catheter or does she pee on a schedule?
Fingers crossed things will progress x

Sorry to hear @Clarissa1971 Flowers

It’s funny; they say they don’t usually encounter girls and young women with bladder problems so don’t seem to know how to help . I always get students trooped round to see me when I’m in ... I’m the exact same with alcohol funnily enough .

Do you get frequent UTIs that exacerbate your symptoms? If so, I can't recommend James Malone-Lees LUTS clinic more highly. There is a private clinic in London and I believe that NHS referral to the Whittington Hospital is also a possibility. Have a google. He gave me my life back after 15 years of bladder hell (severe pain, frequency, urgency, 10+ trips to loo each night)
