How long does it take for an Ovarian cyst to go away!?

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone else has experienced similar?!
At the start of May I had an ultrasound relating to UTi issues but it was discovered I have a 6cm ovarian cyst on one ovary (which seems to be the cause of the issues I was having) id been having symptoms for a few months before. I also had a miscarriage in February. The scan two weeks after (mid feb) stated my ovaries were 'normal' so I assume it wasn't there then
I'm due to have a follow up scan in a few weeks (12 weeks after initial scan), I was told it would be gone after a few menstrual cycles but I know oh is still there as I'm still having symptoms (although they are milder) I'm scared for the scan incase it has got bigger 😩
Has anyone had one that resolved on its own?! Does it just disappear quickly or shrink overtime?

Thank you to anyone who read this 💗

I am not a doctor. But, during a scan to view my Bartholin cyst, last October, they also found a cyst on my ovary and wanted to operate together, the same or next day. I’m not in the UK so there was a language barrier and I was terrified.

Luckily one do the few friends I have made here is a gynecologist, and she came to the hospital and saw my notes and scan pic.

The cyst was not cancerous: it’s one that’s a ball of a mix of different cells. She reassured me that she would always refer it for removal because: they do grow and it would possibly eventually cause issues with the ovary. However there was a question as to how this cyst was missed before, given that I’ve had 2 children. And I was asked if I have ever had a proper ultrasound before.

So I do not know what kind of cyst you have but the one I had, is not going away and should be operated on.
(Everything went fine with mine and no issues)

Normally it goes away in 3-6 cycles. If on follow up it remains the same or increases in size then it is a Gynaecologist referral and then they decide what to do. If on repeat scan the size is less than 5 then you are clinically discharged. If size is more than 5 but less than 6 then you will need another repeat scan. I had one cyst that went away on its own, 2 ruptures and 1 stayed for 2 years and had to removed via surgery.

I have a history of these. 15 years ago had a cyst diagnosed after MC. Turned out to be two, one each side, grapefruit size, one quite complex. Both removed successfully with ovaries in tact. Went on to have two healthy children. Over last 10 years have had a number of sizeable cysts, one about 9cm ruptured a week before surgery scheduled. Very very painful. I have had others 4,5,6 cm that have come and gone. I am apparently an efficient self-resolver. I don't think surgery is thought about unless 10cm or larger, or complex, or causing nasty symptoms. You do need to watch out for torsion and rupture, both of which can cause extreme acute pain and you should seek GP advice (or your consultant if you are being monitored). Rupture in particular can cause peritonitis so you must check your body temp for any fever which is an emergency. I hope you will get all this sort of advice from clinic? Try not to worry too much. If you want to conceive, I think it should be removed if not resolved within six months? Do you have follow-up to monitor any progress?
