should i go to the docs about heavy periods

since i had my dd two years ago have been having really heavy periods

when i say heavy i mean am wearing a tamopon and sanitary towel and am having to replace both within the hour

also flooding through my jeans etc

and am still having period pains a week after i have come off

have also been really spotty like big painful spots under the skin and have embarrassingly been getting thick dark hairs on my face around my chin

do you think i should go to the docs or that they will just say it's hormones - have left it two years to see if it sort itself out but it hasn;t

maybe i should just mention he periods and leave the rest always get the impression that the doctor thinks you are wasting her time thats why i never go

also have put about two stone on during pregany and can not get rid of it could it all be connected

I would go to the gp, you are going to feel very weak if you bleed that much, changing a tampon and sanitary towel every hour is not normal.

chocolatemummy · 27/09/2007 13:59

HI I have been exactly the same since having my daughter almost 4 years ago, I went to the Gp and got some tabelts which helped slow down the bleeding but the pain and bad skin was awful and then one time when I had run out of tablets and came on I was losing so much blood I fainted. I went to Dr the other week because came on just 10 days afterlast ime and because wasnt expecting it had not tablets or towels, I got up and there was blood all over my chair at work and I had to throw pants away and rush home, I went to drs and was bleeding so heavy they thought I was having a miscarriage !
I got an urgent referral to GYNY which in 2 weeks, basically do go to GP because in my experience it has got worse ansd worse since having DD and really affects your life

Bitworseforwear · 27/09/2007 13:59

Go to the drs.

I have just started to take the mini pill because of my horrendous periods and the awful mood swings it causes.

I thought I would have to convince him that my period isn't normal ( very similar to you, housebound for the first few days as I lose so much blood) but he was really nice.

He also gave me some tablets to help lessen the loss as well.

I have only just started to take them both and I have to give it 3 months but I feel so much better that I am actually doing something about it.

Please go and make an appt now

Would certainly suggest you see the GP asap and also ask for a referral to a gynae.

You need to find the underlying cause of the heaviness - fibroids may be the root cause of this for instance. Pills to stop the heavy bleeding will of course help but are just a short term measure and does not address why its happening in the first place.

This needs proper investigation.

will call and make appt now

is it wrong to hope it is some growth that they can remove thus leaving me two stone lighter

do you think i will be ok to take dd with me as i have no childcare? if she needs to examine me i'll have to make another appt won't i

or will she send me for a smear

I know my 'growth' is just my lardy backside!

Bitworseforwear · 27/09/2007 14:13

I didn't have an internal, or external, examination when I went so take DD and then you can always make another appt if neccesary.

Have your periods always been heavy? Mine were quite bad as a teenager but have got steadily worse over time

Bundle · 27/09/2007 14:13

I would. And mention clotting disorders to whoever you see - many women have these which make their periods worse.

mustsleep · 27/09/2007 19:02

no they were quite light before to be honest and only lasted about 3 days ( and i already have ds who is five and that didn;t aletr things)

it only started happening after i had dd and since i have all those probs and also developed excema on my back that is also driving me mad

sort of equated it to the pregnancy which was fine but thought it would settle down

If it is a change from what you have usually been like then I would definately ask for further investigation than just the pill/tablets for bleeding.

Make the appointment in the morning....I'll be on to check that you have

mustsleep · 27/09/2007 19:39

ok will do first thing
