not quite sure what I have done to myself, but I have had a nasty backache - ok when I sit down (but some aching in the front of my legs) but some nasty shooting pains in my lower back when I get up and/or carry steven

anyone got any ideas what this is, and what i should to do get rid of it?

back straight, knees bent when picking up things. if you have problems getting up from lying down eg in bed, place a pillow between your knees lying on one side, and push knees together while pushing yourself up to a sitting position with hands, slowly. this helped mil when she had shocking back pain. paracetamol as good for pain taken regularly, before you get the pain) according to some experts as the anti-inflammatories, without the associated tummy problems.

This is a very good stretch to do first thing in the morning, before you even set a foot out of bed. It really helps loosen your back up for the day. Lie on your back and tuck your knees well into your chest. Cuddle them to you for a count of 20 (keeping your shoulders and neck relaxed on the pillow), then gently let one foot drop to the mattress and slide it out into a stretch while cuddling the other knee, again for a count of 20. Change legs, never letting your tummy muscles take all the weight of your legs, ie slide feet along mattress until the last moment before lifting the leg onto your chest. Then slide your feet up the mattress so that they are as near to your bum as possible and let your knees drop over to one side, letting your feet lift from the mattress but keeping your shoulders and as much of your back as possible on the mattress. Hold for a count of 20, then change sides, hold for another count of 20. Lastly, hug your knees again for 20. Always try to keep your shoulders, neck and head as relaxed as possible - keep breathing easily. An occasional deep breath during the stretch helps. If any of these stretches hurt - don't do them!

sounds like something done to the sciatic nerve. nerves get pinched very easily.

see how it is after a few days and then maybe go to see your GP or an osteopath (she says... i need to go to one too but i keep putting it off... lol!).

if your GP tells you its sciatica, you already know its to do with the sciatic nerve and its causing you problems!

sciatica exercises

I have found doing some stretching works wonders. If you had visited me when you came to Bern I could have shown you

Neurofen! And then try the stretches.
