'sodium chloride' is common salt

don't know what 'sodium chloride sulphate' is though but sulphates are commonly found in stuff too

awaits knowledgeable people

I don't think there's any such thing as sodium chloride sulphate (I'm going to be proved wrong now, aren't I? )

bubbalootie · 27/09/2007 08:12

sodium sulphate is used in detergents

bubbalootie · 27/09/2007 08:13

I agree daisymoo (I am a chemist!)

DaisyMOO · 27/09/2007 08:15

I must remember more Chemistry A Level than I thought then

bubbalootie · 27/09/2007 08:19

NAB3 where did you find this interesting chemical name? I might be able to help more then.

BadKitten · 27/09/2007 09:55

Maybe its Sodium Laureth sulphate you're thinking of? if so - its a surfactant. That means it reduces surface tension so allowing the substance to foam. (well thats how I understand it anyway!)

NAB3 · 27/09/2007 11:10

BadKitten that is what I meant.

And if you really want to know more:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_laureth_sulfate

well you did ask!

Wikipedia is quite good for general science questions (even if some of its other info can be dubious)

wildpatch · 27/09/2007 11:16

NaCl is sodium chloride
SO4 9thats supposed to be litte 4) is the sulphate ion. it cant be stuck on to plain ole NaCl as that already has a zero charge.
so basically, youve got the tname wrong.

NAB3 · 27/09/2007 12:46

Sodium laureth sulphate.

Thanks all.
