Thanks Pruners wondering if any females had one to the right of their bellybutton? I feel the pop on and off but no pain, just uncomfortable until I stand up straight and it goes away. Almost feels like a muscle popping out of place and then back in. See, I knew it would sound mad!

it doesn't sound mad at all. I have a hernia and my friend had one too. I haven't had surgery yet but she has.

I can feel mine particularly when I cough and hold my tummy at the same time but then mine is a large one.

The risk is that they can strangulate and cause a lot of pain. The surgery is standard and recovery is a matter of weeks.

Men tend to get them in their groin area and suffer a lot of pain with them!

Get it checked by your GP.

I went to my Gp the other day as I have a little bulge in my belly button, it appeared recently but I'm not sure when. I did have my second baby about 3 months ago and often have to lift my 4 yr old and so on, so I reckon that may have caused it.

She had a look and said she didn't think it was worth worrying about and that the muscles would probably close up themselves, as it wasn't very big and also there was still a separation between the recti abdomin...whatever! Abdominal muscles!

She also told me she'd just seen a patient who had had corrective surgery on a hernia which was much larger and more of a problem.
It was after a second child also

This woman was recovering fine but the point was, she had had to wait at least 18 months after giving birth to have the op, because you need the muscles around it to be strong enough to carry the repair/heal well afterwards.

Also there is a good chance it will disappear of its own accord if you wait a while.

Not sure of your situation re childbirth/recent pregnancy etc. but hope some of that helps

Veronica, if you google it you'll find it's very common to have it near the navel, not actually 'in' it.

I'd second what Mrs.W says and get it looked at, they will tell you then if it needs sorting out.

Hi I have a hernia in my stomach, pops out occasionally, in fact has been causing discomfort recently and I am booked in for a scan this friday.

I think I have had it for years without any ill effects until carrying my son at about 6months. I used to think it was his bottom sticking up in my ribs, but once born it was obviously not as is still there 2 and half years on.

Sometimes it makes me throw up after a meal and gives stabbing pains, I do practice yoga but sometimes unable to do some positions due to lump.

My GP said it could be a hyatis (sp) hernia

Will let you know the diagnosis veronicaMars if you want once we know.

VeronicaMars · 26/09/2007 19:27

Oh thank you everyone, I did have a section nearly two years ago and I noticed it about six months after that. It's more annoying now and I think it's to do with carrying dd around because she's heavier.
I will go and talk to my gp about it. Would she know by feeling it?
Billysitch please let me know how you get on and what they tell you

I have a hiatus hernia, the symptoms were heartburn when lying down - and it started when I was pg with dd1. I take one Ranitidine (Zantac x 2) tablet every evening, and its no problem.

My friend's dh has a different sort - probably inguinal - and he has pain.

VeronicaMars · 26/09/2007 20:05

I was just thinking of the heartburn thing, last week I ate Lasagne and I had really bad heartburn, woke up at two in the morning and brought it all back up again tmi sorry.
When I heaved this 'lump' in my tummy really stuck out I thought it wasn't going to go back in.

Hi - I dont if this helps or not but I had a hernia in my groin a couple of years ago when I was pregnant with ds2. Had to have an op. I was moving some furniture & felt something go pop (I didnt know I was pregnant at the time). I just had a very attractive swelling & it ached more than hurt. I think it sticks out more when you cough.

VeronicaMars · 27/09/2007 18:09

Hi Kath it just so happens that I have he flu at the moment so everytime I cough sitting down I can feel it moving outwards, I straighten myself up really quickly and can feel it going back in. So horrible and the first time it happened it felt like when I was pregnant and dd was kicking!

Hiya Veronica, all clear for nastys at my scan today, no hernia, although my symptoms sound very much like yours and mine started to get worse when I had a severe asthma attack earlier this year.

As I had miscarried in July thought best to check lump you know to be on the safe side.

Dr says could be a superficial tear in the muscle (6 pack sort, but please do not be under any illusion that I have a 6 pack)and will heal but not for a while, could have been made worse by previous pregnancy and now as doing a lot of phys is aching some what, but sticking with yoga swimming etc and stretching it may help.

No other advice really, but at least I know it is more, I am fat and need to loose weight and exercise, rather than something horrid and operational!

So oky doky here, hope you get some piece of mind and see the GP anyway, doesnt cost anything! (Gosh assuming there that you are UK based)

Take care and good luck xx

VeronicaMars · 28/09/2007 22:16

Thanks for posting Billysitch, good news for you, keep up the yoga. Maybe I should be doing something to strengthen my stomach muscles.
Based in Ireland so I will have to pay out to get checked by my doctor and then I pressume my health insurance will sort the rest out.
At the moment my entire household is sick so I probably won't go for a few weeks as I cannot face another wait at the doctor's surgery.

Billysitch I'm so sorry I meant to say that I'm sorry you had to go through what you did in July. x
