IBD

For the last month or so DD (19) has had diarrhoea and bleeding when going to the toilet - she’s had increased pain in the last few days. Last week she had some tests, the GP just called to say she doesn’t have coeliac but probably has IBD and is referring her to a gastroenterologist. DD was out shopping and didn’t get any more information.
I am going to call the GP back with DD when she gets home to ask if there’s any treatment she can have now, a few times I have had to collect DD when in the park as she urgently needs the toilet.
Does anyone have any idea how long she’ll have to wait to see a gastroenterologist or if there’s any treatment I can ask for now?

Hi,
My 24 year old son has IBD, diagnosed when he was only 9. We found www.crohnsandcolitis.org.uk invaluable for help and support, also self management and the support of the IBD nurse specialists.
Phoning the GP is a wise move to get advice or consulting your local pharmacy.
A potential diagnosis of IBD is a scary prospect, the research and drug treatment for IBD is always improving.
All the best

I’m sorry to hear your son has IBD @serene12.
Unfortunately the dr wasn’t in by the time I called so was told to call tomorrow morning. The receptionist had a look at DDs file and it just stated a positive fecal calprotectin test, referral to gastroenterologist for probable IBD. Hopefully the wait won’t be too long.

Treatment for IBD has moved on considerably in the last 15 years. I have Crohn’s and am the most well/fit I have ever been in my life due to the more recent drug therapies (I’ve had it 26 years and had multiple surgeries / stoma put in, then removed).

Apart from there not being a cure, now is better than ever to be treated for IBD. I wish your DD all the best and for her not to worry.

Thanks @DotBall, I think it will be easier once this initial waiting period is over and DD starts treatment. NICE guidelines state the wait for a specialist should be no more than 4 weeks for an initial presentation, who knows how long it will actually be in the current climate.
