Give him Calpol, if you have already done that give him ibuprofen.

Strip him down to the barest minimum.

Phone NHS Direct as I have no experience of delirium and I don't know if that is really bad or to be expected.

slim22 · 26/09/2007 02:23

put an ice cube in his bottle with water and let him sip frequently

strip him and cool him with some flanel dipped in tepid water (not too cold). That's what they do in hospital. for about 20 to 30mn.
Best areas are forehead/neck/groin sides

give calpol and nurofen every 4 hours (alternate)

check there is no rash

There is a debate as to whether sponging actually works and it can make the child shiver (even if tepid the water cools very quickly) which would make them more uncomfortable. If you want to try it, stick to the forehead. I sometimes use those stick on pads that have a cooling gel but they only go on the forehead and although they may make the child feel a bit better they don't actually reduce temperature.

I hope NHS Direct have something more positive to add. Horrible when this sort of thing happens in the middle of the night as it seems to do.

As a child, I vividly remember becoming delerious if I had a high temperature. DD is now the same. I know it's hard to hear them talking nonsense but all you can do is reassure them, calm them down and treat the temperature with calpol. DD once told me that I wasn't her mummy when in the throws of a fever and it took alot of persuasion to make her realise that in fact I was!!

lucyellensmum · 26/09/2007 17:56

niecie, yes, you are right about the debate, i was told by local out of hours to bath my dd in a bath that was as warm as was safe, this brings the blood to the surface, then allow to air dry in a coolish, not cold room. This brings the temperature down quickly and for longer periods, the trouble with making them cold is that the body reacts to this by immediately trying to raise the temp and therefore its counter productive. It made sense when the nurse explained it to me anyway . More importantly, it worked

Hope NLNN ds is on the mend.

newlifenewname · 26/09/2007 18:38

Hiya, thanks for messages in my absence. Gawd we've had a morning of it. DD has a temp of 39.8 and vomited on and off ever since - including twice at the doctors surgery.

Anyway, apparently ds was suffering from meningism which caused the photosensitivity and headache but he is gradually on the mend although his temp is still 39.7

No antibiotics as yet but will re-assess and probably prescribe if no improvement within 48 hours.

I'm fine with all of this, but the deliriousness was something I haven't seen before in any of my 3 so I was being cautious.
