Canestan pessary when you're pg?

I splashed out £10 on a canestan combi yesterday because this thrush is just so painful. Only to get it home and discover the words "do not use if pg or ttc". But thrush is so common during pg, what are we supposed to use instead (and have I done myself harm by using some old cream I had at home for the past week?)

Have to say, I used one in last pg (after antibiotics for a UTI so minor, didn't even know I had it till midwife picked it up!)
No ill effects on dd.
Could ring midwives at local hospital if you are concerned.

fisil, ggglimpopo (who used to be a HV) got me to get a Canestan combi for her because there's nothing like it in France - can't remember exactly how many weeks she was at the time, around 18-20 I think.

Anyway I checked with the pharmacist in Boots and she said it was OK. Maybe it's just the first 13 weeks they're worried about? Are you past that yet?

smileyragdoll · 13/10/2004 09:17

you can use it but have to be v. careful with the applictor and if it becomes recurrent candida go to the drs

I used the cream when pregnant (had it perscribed so I know it was OK). Give your midwife a ring and check but I'm sure, as Jan says, it would be fine.

I'm told yoghurt on a tampon helps - but I've never been able to face that myself!

Canesten have an advice line on 0845 758 50 30.

I was given both pessary and cram in hospital before I had dd2 (on loads of antibiotics). Including having a pesary the night before I was induced! Check with the doc if OK to use - do you know the reason for the thrush? There might be something else to do for it?

fisil · 13/10/2004 12:48

Thank you thank you thank you. I am 11 or 12 weeks, depending on who you listen to. I will give them a ring later and check that it is OK. Just want to stop itching!

No-one tried yoghurt then?

jabberwocky · 13/10/2004 12:52

Tried the yoghurt. I think it did help. Make sure you use plain, sugar-free.

Right, will do without the applicator.

Yorkiegirl, is that the one that means I will have to hang out in cafes with dorky bacteria man?

But he's a veggie - it'll have to be olive oil!

My mum once told me to try inserting a clove of garlic. I do NOT recommend this; trying to remember what was worse, the stinging or the smell...

Seriously, I asked my GP about this once when I thought I was pg, and she said the pessary was OK but to avoid the oral pill. But as others have said, check out with your midwife.
