Hi.
I took my daughter to the doctors yesterday as she has been quite lethargic or late and also has a cold. Just went to get her checked over really. The GP just said her throat looks a bit sore prescribed paracetamol and ibruprofen. She said my daughter is fine besides that.

I just had a voicemail from my GP surgery telling me to call them urgently as I need to bring my daughter back in. I called and the receptionist said yesterday a child that was also in the waiting area before you go in had measles. They are calling everybody who came in with a child yesterday so that they can come back in......as they may need a SECOND MMR!!!! My daughter is only 3.1 and had her MMR when she was about 15 months old. The next one is not due until 4 or 5.

I have got an urgent appointment for tomorrow but I am not happy with the thought of her having a 2nd mmr so soon. Why would the first MMR not be protecting her from measles at the moment.

Would you allow a second one?

Sorry if there are loads of spelling mistakes Typing fast as feel a bit shocked.

Thanks.

This is rason for 2nd dose apparantly:

"It is advisable for your child to have a 2nd MMR, because 5-10% of children receiving the first dose may not make protection to all 3 components of the vaccine.
Even if children have responded to the vaccine the first time, there will be no problem from being exposed to the viruses again. It's like any one of us who is immune meeting someone with the disease - the infection can't get established. If the child did not respond first time, they remain susceptible to natural infection, and need the second dose.

There are several reasons why, in line with the World Health Organisation, we do not recommend children have blood tests to check immunity. We are not aware of any country in the world recommending blood tests to check immunity prior to a second dose of MMR.

Indeed many vaccines, such as diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, Hib, meningitis C and polio all require more than one dose in order to fully protect a child.

There are blood and saliva tests available that measure antibody levels to measles, mumps and rubella viruses but these were not designed to check immunity. These tests were designed on the basis of acute infection and not for the measurement of protection levels against these diseases. In fact, there is very little evidence about what are the protective levels of antibodies needed to produce adequate immunity to measles, mumps and rubella. No conclusions regarding immunity can be drawn from this test, thus there is no apparent gain from carrying out what can be an unpleasant, painful blood test. "

More info here on when to give second dose and why.

Okay to have second dose after the age of 18 months.

Thanks so much hulababy :-) I had NO idea you could give the second dose as early as 4 weeks after the first! Thats really surprising.
Not as panic stricken as I was now. It just seemed WAY too early as the 2nd dose is always talked about when they are 4 or 5.
Thanks again :-)
