MY gums our bleeding everytime I brush them or floss - like a mouth full of blood sorry if tmi.

I visited the Dentist about a month ago and mentioned about the bleeding gums -she just gave my teeth a scale and polish and said my gums looked a bit inflammed but not too worry.

I asked her for a prescription for Corsydol mouthwash which I Know is great for gum probs, however it doesn't seem to be working anymore.

i had the same problem but can't remember whta the hygienist said i know that since visiting her, i no longer have that problem. naybe you could visit your s as well?

iirc, corsidyl is only meant to be used for a short time because it can damage your gums? (does it say anything about this on the bottle?)

Bleeding gums indicate gum disease usually. When I had this problem, the dentist told me to brush and floss really well three times a day. Use disclosing tablets to show you if you're missing a bit.

Bled like mad, but soon cleared up.

Am not a dentist though! I'd go back if I were you.

Katsma, Corsodyl won't damage gums, it is only reccommended for short term use as it can stain the teeth & that staining can be difficlut to remove.

It may well be that your oral hygiene is starting to slip. Floss/brush twice a day, 3 times if possible. They will bleed for a while, before they get better.

Make sure you have a small headed softish toothbrush. A Sensodyne 2.5 is a good brush. Anything too hard will irritate the gums & cause bleeding.

Make sure you have an alcohol free mouthwash.

Be gentle with the floss, it should slide gently up & down & should be able to go underneath the gumline. If you find flossing hard, try the interdental brushes. Tepe's are available form Boots & the orange ones are usually a good starting size.

If you are still concerned, I would visit your dentist again.

Have you considered that it might be gingivitis?

Do a bit of googling, and if you're still unhappy, go back to the doc's and be more assertive about diagnosis.

Worst case scenario (and I'm not trying to frighten you but I am trying to help), is that the gum infection goes down to your heart valves.

I am the polar opposite of a hypochondriac, but I do know that sometimes the condition can have serious repercussions.

My dhs hygenist told him it was down to recently giving up smoking and all his blood vessels going back to normal. Never heard this before, but there you go! He did ask if he should take up smoking again, but got a bit of a funny look

Brangelina · 26/09/2007 12:04

Are you getting enough vit C? Bleeding gums is also a key symptom of scurvey. I used to have this when I smoked, as the ciggies would leach vit C out of my body, but haven't had it since I stopped. Maybe try upping your fruit and veg?

Desiderata, I think it's only when there is already damage to the heart valves that there is potential danger from having dental treatment and they prescribe prophylactic antibiotics if that is the case.

BarbieGirl · 26/09/2007 16:19

Thanks all.

Wow - bit worried about the heart valve thing. Strangely enough my FIL said something about this a while back. Something about if you have bleeding gums or general poor oral hygiene it can affect the heart - how I don't know.

I think maybe I brushing my teeth too quickly and not spending enough time on them and concentrating on my gums. I have bought an excellent electric toothbrush & use Corsodyl twice a day so hopefull will clear up if not I will visit the Dentist again.

Does anyone know if Acid Reflux will cause oral probs? I suffered from this a few months back for a while but it seems to have stopped. I was wondering if the Acid coming up from my Stomach was causing probs iukwim.?

Try regular brushing along the gum line with an interspace brush (I get them from the dentist). The brush has a single tuft and an angled head and can reach where a normal brush can't. Works for my gums!

Same for me see hygienist but still bleeding for last few months now
