Eye pain

I often have pain in my eyes, mainly my left eye and they feel heavy. The pain feels like as if I had a bruise on the top of my eye ball. I’m constantly having to open my eyes wide open and blink to make them feel back to normal again. Also my vision gets slightly more blurred aswell. Is this something to be concerned about? And who would I see about this, an optician or a doctor?

See an optician. They are still doing phone advice even if you can’t be seen face to face.

I wonder if you have dry eyes if blinking helps?

Blinking actually exacerbates dry eyes, weird I know. You could try something like Viscotears which is a lubricant for eyes. That’s the brand name but there’s non branded also, you can only get it from a chemist.

Sounds like you have so lesions from dry eye.

Yes, see an optician, they are open, supersavers are open, but start with some blink eye drops and maybe an eye heating pad.

Thanks everyone. I spoke to the doctor today anyway as I had some other symptoms and they’ve recommended I go to the opticians. I have an appointment at Specsavers next week but think I’ll try some eye drops in the mean time

I can highly recommend the optase eye heat mask.

It does sound like dry eye - but yes, you need to be seen as there are other conditions that could cause your symptoms as well as cause dry eye.

Blinking usually helps dry eye as it spreads the tear layer over the eye. The tear layer has lots of functions including providing a regular optical surface so that you can see properly as well as making the eye more comfortable. Having a low blink rate can also make your eyes dryer.

Lord - that mask will only help if you have blocked meibomian glands, if you have aqueous tear or mucin deficiency, it could make it worse.

Non-preserved ocular lubricants (dry eye drops that don't have preservatives) will be safe to use up to your appointment. Ask your pharmacist what they have in stock.
