Does anyone know if I could have my teeth whitened with an NHS Dentist?

Or do I have to go to a private/cosmetic Dentist??

Anyone know how much it costs? Are we talking hundreds or thousands?

Thanks

Sorry cant help but bumping for you as would love to know myself.

rdk · 23/09/2007 22:02

ive had my polished up a few times at my nhs dentist which did whiten them a lot.maybe if it does cost lots to have them whitened why not get them polished up a few times to see if that gives a good result for you too.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 23/09/2007 22:04

Yes you can, there is a poster up at my HNS dentist.

My friend had it done at a beauty place and it cost (her mother! who was throwing her money about for some uncharactistic reason!) £300. It was months ago now and she still has a dazzling white smile!

You can't have it done if you have any cap/crown work in your gob though sadly. (Like I could afford it though.. ha!)

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 23/09/2007 22:05

(NHS!)

I doubt you can get you a*hole bleached at the dentist though! Wonder if they even do that in this country yet?! And why.. just why?!

paolosgirl · 23/09/2007 22:07

I thought the a-hole bleaching was an urban myth . Do people really do that?????

You can get your teeth bleached on the NHS - my friend had it done and it cost £300, but it looks really good.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 23/09/2007 22:08

Think it's just in LA Paolo'sgirl.. which figures..!

loopylou6 · 23/09/2007 22:34

an nhs dentist will do it, but u have to pay for it, ive recently had it done and it cost 550 quid i also have caps at the top so just had the bottoms done.

BarbieGirl · 26/09/2007 16:39

I phoned my Dentist and the receptionist has booked me in to have impressions done then I go back for the actual whitening. But after reading shinyhappypeoples post I am not sure it will happen.

I didn't realise that about crowns or caps - I am gutted. I have a few. Why didn't the receptionist mention this to me? I had my heart set on having new pearly whites. It cost £200 btw- not too bad.

loopy - you paid £550 just for the bottom ones?? OMG.

It would cost me £200 for all teeth but as I have crowns on the top & bottom I might aswell cancel my appointment now .

I have 2 crowns and am just about to have my teeth whitened. It CAN be done. However I am having the whitening done BEFORE having my crowns replaced to make sure they will be the same colour.

BarbieGirl · 26/09/2007 16:45

Budababe. The crowns I have are on my back teeth so could I just have the fronts done as no one can see my back teeth so it wouldn't matter?

Not sure how it works tbh- do you?

Budababe · 26/09/2007 16:58

It should be fine as far as I know.

I am having mine done next week and last week I went and the dentist took a mold of my teeth. It depends which method of whitening you are having done - the one were you take the stuff home and do yourself or the one where you have it all done at the dentist. That is what I am having.

BarbieGirl · 26/09/2007 17:00

I'm having it all done at the Dentist - she will take impressions then I go back to have it done.

Why can't it be done if a person has crowns -do you know??

OP posts:
Budababe · 26/09/2007 17:01

Not too sure if it CAN'T be done but maybe it doesn't whiten the crowns and if they are in the front it would be noticeable?

BarbieGirl · 26/09/2007 17:04

true - mine are all at the back so fingers crossed.

Some info here - towards the bottom of the page is a bit about how it won't work on crowns.

pointydog · 26/09/2007 17:29

you can get it done by an NHS dentist but you still pay the whack for it surely?

Don't tell me my taxes are used for people to get their teeth whitened. I couldn't stand it.

bossykate · 26/09/2007 17:30

you can have it done by an nhs dentist but it won't be an nhs service - you have to pay. it is hundreds rather than thousands.

BarbieGirl · 26/09/2007 17:34

Budababe - so does this mean I can't get it done??

I think I will phone the Dentist tomorrow and ask.

Thanks.
