I want to drink more water. I hate it. Need a good free app to get me into the habit. Any thoughts?

I drinks lots of tea ( too much tea) and I know I’m not hydrated enough. I never get thirsty so need an app to prompt me.
Anyone use an easy free app that they would recommend?

Not an app but have you tried drinking hot water? I boil a kettle then put a drop of cold water in a mug and top it up with hot I can almost convince myself it's tea sometimes Brew

frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 11/06/2020 13:25

Lots of fruit teas can be used as a cold infusions, so you are getting the best of both worlds.

Justmuddlingalong · 11/06/2020 13:29

I made a habit of drinking a glass of water every time I'm at the kitchen sink. You'd be amazed at how many glasses of water that adds up to during the day. You'll pee all the time to begin with, but it does settle after a few days.

AgeLikeWine · 11/06/2020 13:32

I don’t use an app, but it isn’t hard to make water more enjoyable. Try squeezing a wedge of lemon or lime into your water or just add a Little splash of low-sugar squash. Get a filter jug, and keep the water in your fridge. Chilled, filtered water is much more palatable that water from the tap, particularly in summer.

MeepleMe · 11/06/2020 13:35

I am exactly the same. I rarely feel thirsty except for when it's really hot weather. I look at people finishing bottles of water at work all day and think how?!
I've tried squash, fruit tea etc, helps a bit but all too often I get to the end of the day and realise all I've had is 1 cup of tea.
@Justmuddlingalong I'm going to try this, thank uou!

PecorinoPear · 11/06/2020 13:37

I downloaded plant nanny. It wanted me to drink a ridiculous amount so I deleted it.

PecorinoPear · 11/06/2020 13:39

Sorry, that wasn't very helpful. I just find if I keep a water bottle close by, I drink more. Helps that we have a water cooler at work.

minipie · 11/06/2020 13:42

I’m the same! I doubt a reminder app would work on me though, I just delete the reminder (I have a daily reminder in my calender at 10pm to Go To Bed which I ignore every day).

Drinking every time I’m at the kitchen sink is an interesting idea.

I’ve found it helps to keep a glass by the sink in the bathroom, as I always feel thirsty after brushing teeth so that’s two glasses of water at least.

minipie · 11/06/2020 13:43

Also taking a bottle of water on any walking journey helps especially if it’s one you do daily eg commute or school run. These journeys are so boring I’m more likely to drink the water as something to do.

donquixotedelamancha · 11/06/2020 14:04

I know I’m not hydrated enough

May I ask how you know that? You'd need to drink about 10+ cups of tea for it to have any diuretic effect, up to then it's hydrating you just like water and unless you are having 20 ups a day the effect will be minimal.

Why not just have squash instead of water?

Batqueen · 11/06/2020 14:06

Fruit tea instead of regular tea? It’s basically fruity water

BigButtons · 11/06/2020 14:11

@Justmuddlingalong that is a really good idea.
I am hoping that if I drink more I will want to drink more.
I too look on is astonishment at all the people at work who are constantly sipping from their water bottles.

@Tryingtogetitright I do much prefer hot water/ squash etc

@donquixotedelamancha I'm not sure- foggy feeling, skin looks kind of a bit haggard and is dry.
I also like a bit of wine in the evening so I need to make sure I make up for that too.

From my experience in hospital and talking to doctors it really doesn’t matter if you don’t drink water, you just need to drink. Obviously full-sugar fizzy is less than ideal but tea only is fine. I’ve had this exact discussion as I only drink tea and can have 6-10 mugs a day. The only time I drink water or squash is when running or doing heavy work in the garden.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/06/2020 14:16

What about a water bottle with timings on the side? You'd still have to remember to drink it, but when you saw it you'd have a 'target' to drink to.

This type of thing:

I want to drink more water. I hate it. Need a good free app to get me into the habit. Any thoughts?
NannyR · 11/06/2020 14:17

Looking at the colour of your urine is a good indicator of how hydrated you are. If you are weeing lots and it's very pale in colour then you are fine; small amounts of darker urine then you need to drink more.

BigButtons · 11/06/2020 14:20

trouble is with tea and me is that I have sugar in it, which i suspect is the reason I drink so much of it. That is another battle- weaning myself off sugar. I only ever have it in tea- eat no biscuits, chocolate etc and never crave them.
I don't drink any juice or fizzy drinks.
I suppose I was thinking that if I drank more than I do I would somehow be pinging with energy and have dewy plump skin with fewer lines .....

BigButtons · 11/06/2020 14:21

I like the water bottle with timings too for when I am at work

To stop taking sugar in tea I kept a spare mug by the kettle. Every time I put sugar in my tea I put the same amount in the empty mug. Amazing how fast it adds up over the day and the shock of that stopped me! Still like sugar in my tea as an occasional treat but usually drink it without now.

userabcname · 11/06/2020 14:42

I drink loads of water - it's a habit you just need to get in to. Start with a glass of water when you wake up. Drink one with every meal. I have a big cup or water bottle that I keep topped up all day and sip throughout. Can't say I'm particularly energetic but I'm definitely hydrated!

Karenenya · 11/06/2020 14:47

The best thing I bought was a soda stream. I now drink loads more than I used to, as I love sparkling water with a slice of lemon in it .

NanTheWiser · 11/06/2020 15:59

While it's good to stay hydrated, by drinking water, don't overdo it!

This article appeared a couple of days ago, by Zoe Salmon, who thought drinking up to 10 litres a day was healthy, until her doctor advised her to cut down:
www.pressreader.com/uk/daily-express/20200609/282265257662658

Drinking too much upsets the electrolyte balance of the body, and can be very dangerous.

Torvean · 17/06/2020 02:08

I have a water battle. It's just for at home as it goes up to 1500mls. ( Obviously i have a smaller one when i am out). I also don't like water. However i use sugar free diluting juices. I now dont drink tea or 9coffee. Very occasionally i have fruit teas.
