Dental sedation

How effective is dental sedation? I'm due to have some teeth out next month at a specialist clinic and I'm nervous it won't sedate me enough. I had a colonoscopy once and the sedation was barely effective. Please tell me dental sedation works as I don't think I will be able to go ahead if it doesn't work.

Hi. I had a complex double extraction of impacted wisdom teeth 2 weeks ago. IV sedation used. It was absolutely fine and I was nervous too. I remember the scratch in my hand for the IV, then a very woozy (painless) memory of some injections into my gum then that's literally it til I woke up. No pain and I can't remember anything of it. To be honest it was great, a bit woozy for the rest of the day but nothing to be scared about and I'd do it again definitely. Don't be scared. It's like being really sleepy drunk without feeling sick. Xx

Thank you this exactly what I want to hear Smile. I don't mind needles so I'm lucky in this respect but just so so scared so your comment really helps.

Ah happy to help. I'm not bad with needles, I can grin and bear it, but it worked so fast and effectively you will barely register what's happening. I am fairly sure that one of the drugs used is an amnesiac so you won't remember anything. It's really hard to explain what it's all like - I had a tiny bit of awareness at one point but couldn't have cared less that they were pulling my tooth out. I heard them say they would top up the sedation and that was all I remember. You will be absolutely fine, and probably remember nothing. Good luck and hugs xxx

Thank you. How long did it take from arriving to leaving?

I am utterly, utterly terrified of the dentist (I have cried in the waiting room...) and I have recently had two lots of quite complex treatments under IV sedation. Both times I have been petrified going in, sat in the chair almost crying and then remembered and felt virtually nothing until I was going home in the car afterwards. It is AMAZING. During the first treatment I have a faint recollection of coming round a bit, feeling a bit bored that it was still going on, then drifting back to sleep again!

Just to say as well that, as I clearly come across as a bit of a wet blanket in that last message, I am generally quite practical and sensible! Sedation is marvellous!

I’ve had it a few times for dental stuff- I am terrified of dentists.
I’ve never had a problem- always been out enough to get through the procedures. Some funny/ odd memories of bits and pieces, but no pain.
Once I came round and they said I had cried the whole time, but I don’t remember.
Good luck!!

Thank you!! I'm the same, tearful and a nightmare to work on as I shake. I've never had a tooth out before and I need 3 out. One impacted wisdom tooth, the one next to it which has been pushed and a third weird tooth I have on my palate which has cracked. I'm reassured by the comments, thank you.

It's provisionally booked for the 8th July and I'm hoping it goes ahead so I can get on with my life without all this worry and pain/discomfort.

I had 2 wisdom teeth removed under sedation in January and I am a anxious about dentists. It was FABULOUS. Would swear I had been out cold, came to in a different chair in the recovery room, apparently I was coherent (ish) and compliant, and I can thoroughly recommend it. Recovery was straightforward, no infection. Am convinced it was because the dentist could get on and do her job without the distraction of me squeaking etc.

wanderlove · 09/06/2020 20:43

No memory of anything! It was amazing.

plixy · 09/06/2020 20:44

Make sure you find a dentist that does it via IV cannula and not just a single dose.
I have been sedated twice and it makes quite a difference.
The first time I was given one large dose by injection. No cannula used so had to be large enough dose to last through the procedure. However it lasted for ages after and I had no idea what I was doing for most of the day. I even ended up calling people several times as I didn't remember doing it.
Second time they used a cannula and gave a small dose. I still felt no pain and remembered nothing until it was over. They apparently have a top up half way through but still only a small dose. I 'came to' as they got me out the chair. I remember leaving and everything after. Much better experience!

Thank you everyone. It is by iv canula plixy so that's worth knowing. I will come and look at these replies every time I need some reassurance.

Is it expensive? I had it once a few years ago and I can't remember how much it cost, imagine!

Rainbowgravy · 10/06/2020 11:28

saveeno I've been referred to a clinic as an NHS patient so it will only cost £62 ish which I am very grateful for.
