Anyone with a baby who has had a UTI?

My 5 month old DD has just had her second urinary tract infection in less than a month. Has anyone else had a young baby who has had this and what was the follow up treatment like?
All the recommendations to prevent them are aimed at older children, so I am not sure there is anything else I can do to stop this happening again.

We are both finding it all quite distressing as the long term antibiotics are not well received by her at all. Any suggestions or experiences gratefully accepted.

I know a friend had to give her dd antibiotics for a year after she got a major uti at just a few weeks' old. She got used to them and now she is fine, I am not aware of any other treatment and she got signed off by the hospital at just over a year.

Thanks - I am hoping that she will get used to them as well - so far has perfected the projectile spit of the antibiotic

My friend's dd was on a tiny dose by the end.

Have you tried squirting the abs into her cheek? Makes it harder to spit out.

Must have been v. stressful for you, hope your little one continues to do well. xxx

My DS2 has kidney reflux and has been on AB'S since he was born (9 monhs now. He didn't like them at first but now takes them like a pro (opens up mouth and everything LOL). We found squirting into the cheek a very little at a time gradually increasing the amount squirted each time until it takes maybe 2 squirts to administer the full dose worked for us. You may find your DD will be referred for an ultrasound to try and find out the reasons for the infections.

Did they know that your DS had kidney reflux from birth Haribosmum? My DD has had an ultrasound when she was ill in hospital with the UTI last time which was clear, we are now waiting for the other scans to see if it is reflux.

I had better success this am - into the cheeks like you said but I hate giving it to her - she cries throughout and looks at me with a stare that says 'why'.

Hi. Yes they knew from birth but my SIL's son has the same thing and they didn't know until he has a bad infection after he was born. I don't think it's anything to 'worry' about as such. Apparently most kids grow out of it as their kidneys mature.

As for the pulling on your heartstrings, just think how much pain she's in when she has an infection. Got to be better giving her the medicine than not eh?

I have had two babies who had problems. My youngest wouldnt feed and was admitted and they found she had a uti. She was on antibiotics for about a year. She is now 8 and very healthy.

My eldest had four kidneys and had to have major surgery. We were bumped around for a while until they diagnosed her. It was very frightening and she was on antibiotics for four years. She is now twelve and following her surgery never looked back and is incredibly healthy.

I was worried about all the antibiotics but it doenst seem to have had any effect at all and they are both pretty robust.

Thanks for the reassurance - did your dc have the runs on the antibiotics? My dd is continuous at the moment and her bottom is raw. If this was the case for you did you find it calmed down over time?

My dd was hospitalised with a UTI when she was 8 months old- no one took any notice of me at the GPs, I was constantly told its colic, teething, maybe she s just one of those babies that cries a lot. It wasn't until she had a temp of 40.5 and febrile convulsions that we took her to A&E and someone actually listened to us. She was then diagnosed with renal reflux and was on antibiotics for a couple of years. She's now 4 and has been discharged by the paediatrician and thank God she doesn't have any damage to her kidneys. At least your dd has been diagnosed quickly and is being treated. Try not to worry too much- she will grow out of it- I was told that over time the valves strengthen and start to do their job properly.
DS is 4months old and in a couple of weeks has to go in for tests to see if he has the same. Am dreading it!
DD had terrible nappy rash from time to time- metanium was a godsend

my dd had one at 8mo with massive temp, although it only took a course of antibiotics to clear up.

she didnt get another one till 2.6 and then she needed 2 different courses of anti-bs as the first didnt get rid of it!

zazas, someone recommeded Solgar's acidophi;us powder to me when my ds had the runs, although in the end he didn't need it. Alternatively when your dd is weaning you can give her live yoghurt which will put back the 'good' bacteria. It might be worth asking your hv if she knows of anything else you can try.
