Menopause after HRT

Not the obvious Mumsnet title but you've never failed me yet.

Mum has had HRT patches for years but has recently has to stop them and is now suffering from hot flushes big time. Can any of you offer any advice or even just reassurance that they'll stop ?

She's quite miserable at the moment & is struggling to come to terms with being 60 soon so we'd all appreciate anything which might help.

just want to bump this as my mums in the same position and having a really hard time.

I think the only thing they can do is look for the natural plant oestrogens and take as supplements/augment their diet.

There is a book in the shops called something like 'the natural menopause' which has some good ideas in it!

Yes soapbox is right. Try and find a book about the menopause which has info. about diet. I think changing your diet can help quite a lot.I'm sure I've read that in ?Japan women have very few symptoms at menopause and its to do with their diet.

When my mum stopped using HRT patches she effectively went through the menopause all over again. This time she said it wasn't as bad overall as the first time - the whole 'process' takes less time, and is less extreme, though it is miserable while it's happening. There are all sorts of dietary things you can do and supplements that you can take that help you through it.

Unfortunately my parents are travelling at the moment and are quite difficult to get hold of. IIRC one of the most important things to do was to take a very good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement designed for menopausal women. Taking plant oestrogens was also helpful, as was cutting down on the amount of animal protein in the diet and increasing the amount of vegetable protein. I think my mum stopped the HRT about six months ago (or maybe more) but the menopause symptoms are vastly improved already.

Thanks !

I've just had a look at Amazon and there are a number of books ont the natural menopause which look like they could be helpful. There's also one by Jenni Murray (R4 Women's Hour) which gets good reviews so I think I'll send her a parcel.
