Vitamin deficiency

How long does it take to correct vitamin deficiency. I’ve had splitting for months and months at the corners mouth. Chronic fatigue and tremors. Doctors tested me for B12 iron and folic. All ok. But I’ve been in a right mess for months. Even had cracking at the corners of my eyes, Also had bowel investigation. I was getting sicker and sicker. So I paid for a gut biome test as this has been going on 2 years in all. It came back I’m low on B2 side effects splitting of the corners of your eyes lips chronic fatigue and nerve damage. My stomach is not processing it. Anyway I’ve started to take vitamin B2 . How long does it take for vitamin deficiencies and damage to be corrected. I’m quite angry because I asked the Doctor if I could be deficient in another vitamin and she said no you’ve had enough tests done. I’ve been drinking through a straw for six months because my lips have been in such a mess.

I've no idea, but Flowers that sounds awful. Would Google not tell you a quick answer? Hope you get better soon.

I’ve had a look but it only mentions vit d and b12

That's frustrating. It's the sort of question a nutritionist would be able to answer. If one doesn't come along here maybe you could find one in real life to ask, perhaps in the local hospital relevant department, it seems a straight forward question for someone in the field.

B vitamins are water soluble, take a couple of hundred percent of daily dose for a few days to kickstart. You should start to see a difference.

My vit d was 7, the injections did nothing but a month of 20,000 iu really started to make an impact.

I changed my diet 3 years to reduce my 60% chance of cancer linked to a genetic mutation I have to a vegan diet and while my skin tumours reduced I started after a couple of years to not feel right. The first lot of test was the general tests done at GP, then I paid for private omega 3 index and I was critically low despite eating enormous amount of plant-based omega 3 food (flax, chia, walnuts)
Omega 3 deficiency can cause dry and flaky skin. You can do a prick test t home with them omegaquant.com/what-is-the-omega-3-index/ but with the covid delay in mailing, maybe a paid test at your local lab is better. It costs 60 Australian dollar, so roughly 30 pounds in UK

If you have absorption issues (could be tons of reasons) , you should take sprays and not pills, as sprays are absorbed by the mucous of the mouth and you bypass any gut malabsorption . Buy nutritional yeast and sprinkle two tablespoons on your salads . It is extremely rich in the Bs vitamin

There is however another possibility which has nothing to do with vitamin: angular cheilitis . What you describe is quite extreme and I wonder if your GP did swab your lip corner?

Maybe you have two separate issues.

I think you maybe right I’m trying to correct my gut at the moment. I did the york test and it said to not take milk, yeast and egg. I’ve not got fungal issues as I’ve had my saliva tested .

You can get a vitamin B group injection which may have a faster impact than tablets. My daughter and members of a theatre cast we’re all given them once when they were all exhausted on tour. Cracks at the corners of your mouth are common deficiency symptoms.

sylvee · 07/06/2020 09:31

@Tasharuby1

I have B12 deficiency and you describe classic symptoms. In the UK the level for low B12 is different at different surgeries and hospitals/ trusts. Anything under 300 is low, optimum levels should be 1000 over time to improve symptoms. You may have been told your B12 is fine but actually it's still in a low enough range to cause symptoms

I can recommend a really helpful FB group that has lots of information and advice on B12 deficiency, plus the other vitamins that are needed to all work together and be at optimum levels:

Have you tried an anti fungal cream such as Daktarin on your mouth corners?

Yes it’s not fungal the skin is just splitting and my lips are continually shedding. I’ve had my saliva tested as well no fungal component

I would think a few months to see reversal. Canesten dabbed in the corners will help a bit in the meantime.

Shouldn't your GP be looking into why you're not absorbing B vitamins though? (I know alcohol prevents absorption of Bs, so cutting that out entirely would help).

EmergencyPractitioner · 07/06/2020 10:50

Some skin scrapping to microbiology lab may be more helpful. Saliva may not be best way to detect fungi etc as they could be destroyed by the enzymes in it.

Have you actually tried an anti fungal or steroid/anti fungal combination cream? A small dab twice a day for a week would be worth trying.

Also have you been checked for diabetes?

Yes I tried it for weeks and had the mouth wash. B12 was fine they don’t test for B2. I found that out through a gut biome test I paid for private. I was getting splits in the corners of my eyes. When I looked at B2 deficiency symptoms splitting of skin lips and corners of the eyes. I’m taking a vit B 2 supplement. My lips have improved a bit since taking them they are not pealing as much. But the skin is still slightly splitting still. There is no fungal aspect or crusting just splitting and pealing .

Why are you low in B2? That is very unusual as it's very plentiful in food. Are you on a restricted diet or do you have malabsorption issues?

I don’t know as I take multivitamins and eat salmon and eggs. Think it’s malabsorption. Not sure what else can cause it .

Oh I don’t drink. I don’t eat sugar or gluten or dairy but I do have dairy substitutes

Record for a week every single morsel and sip on cronometer cronometer.com and see if you cover your needs.
It is free and I use it daily to make sure all my mineral and vitamin are covered.
As previously said, just a tiny amount of nutritional yeast send my B1, B2, B3 and B6 through the roof.

Are you taking a vitamin A supplement ? Vitamin A toxicity causes skin issues. Or are taking some medications? Have you see a link between starting a medication and the lips/ eyes?

Tasharuby1 · 07/06/2020 22:49

Thanks, I was taking a multivitamin. But I’ve switched to just vit b zinc and vitb2 and vit d I take flaxseed oil. No meds now apart from Low Dose Naltrexone which has helped with stomach and chronic fatigue. That was triggered by Gastritis after Antibiotics.

MsMeNz · 08/06/2020 01:31

Sounds.like.imfection to.me.and possibly fungal. I had some.thing.liek this Dr and pharmacy dismissed that it would go away so I self medicated please don't copy me I'm not.dr.but I used over counter counter funcal treatment morning and a steroid cream at night it cleared up in 2-3 days after months of agony. I did not any oral thrush either.

MsMeNz · 08/06/2020 01:32

Forgot to say I suffered for months with it and over coldsore meds did.nothing. but fungal and steroid taken at different times did.

It’s very low dose 3mg . It’s taken as an anti inflammatory it an old drug that is being used in low dose for chrons IBS CFS and MS. Google it. It was originally designed for AIDS patients and people with drink and drug problems to get them clean . But they found at extremely low levels it can help your immune system reboot.
