I think I’ve been given out of date medication

I picked up a prescription on Friday that I’ve only just opened, it’s for an antidepressant, but quite an old fashioned one if that makes a difference. I’ve tried several over the years and this is the one that seems to suit me best. It’s in a totally plain box with the prescription in my name stuck to the front, but the blister packs inside say 05/2020. I know we’re talking a few days but should I have been given this? And is it safe to take?

I'd take it back to the pharmacy and ask them.
Usually they date check the stock regularly but sometimes things could slip through I guess

I wouldn't think it would matter for a few days. A few months I'd be concerned. That said, I've taken Amitriptyline a year out of date and they've still worked fine.

No take it back - presumably it's a course of medicine not a one off tablet and so it is now out of date.

The pharmacy should record this as an incident and ensure the right date checking procedures are in place.

Ring the pharmacist tomorrow and check if you're worried.

I'd feel OK about taking them as medication doesn't just go out of date overnight, there's time built in for safety.

If it helps, I'm also on a type of AD that isn't prescribed much any more but which works well for me. I used up some old ones when I changed dose a couple of months ago so as not to waste them, they were about six months out of date. I didn't notice any ill effects and they worked as they were supposed to.
