Sciatica help

I've suffered with lower back pain on one side over the years. I felt it go again 3 weeks ago whilst doing an obstacle course with my daughter in the garden. Since then I have been finding it difficult to get comfortable in any position. I went for a bike ride on Friday and the pain felt like it was moving down my bum and into my leg. Didn't sleep at all on Friday night and had pins and needles in my leg and couldn't walk on Saturday morning. Eventually it went off in the afternoon. Woke up today it was ok. Then I keep getting bouts of pain in my bum so it hurts to stand. Has anyone had anything like this before? I've had a look online and and looks like it could be sciatica? Just wondering how long it might last as I'm really struggling with the pain. 😩 any advice would be appreciated

It certainly sounds like sciatica, there are stretches you can do that will stretch out the piriformis muscle and your hamstrings which can contribute to the nerve being affected. There's also a nice gentle video on YouTube by Adrienne called yoga for sciatica which I use when I get it. I'd try stretching it out for a few days and see if it improves.

Sounds sciatic to me! Have a chat with your gp tomorrow, there may be a painkiller they can give you for it to help symptoms, unfortunately sciatica is something you wait out..

Thank you so much for all your replies. I really appreciate it. I've had problems with the lower side of my back on and off since I was about 16 but it was always manageable with painkillers. I'm in my 30's now it's never been this painful before nurofen isn't even touching it. It was the pins and needles that was worrying me. I did try some stretches yesterday and that helped and it went off. I tried doing some this morning and it made it worse. Would be good to find some stretches to do if they help so will hold off on them until I've spoke to the doctor. Will call them Doctor tomorrow and see what they say.
Thanks again for your responses ☺️

Definitely speak to the GP - we one get one back unfortunately!

They may be able to prescribe naproxen (stronger ibuprofen), or indeed a diazepam/co-codamol combo if you're suffering with spasms - DP has had that before, and some colleagues at work have prescribed both to patients as well.

Depends on your medical history, and what your doctor thinks really!

Thank you for the advice on the painkillers. Fingers crossed the Dr can help tomorrow. Just quickly though even though it hurts to walk/stand at the moment do you think that trying to walk around will help at all at this stage? I'm just worried that sitting around on it will make it worse. Or if I try walking around on it I will make it worse? Don't know where to put myself.

I know it's a bit alternative but I've had amazing success with accupuncture for sciatica. Even just one session when it flares massively helps with the pain.

(I'd say it basically fixed my last flare up from being barely able to walk to walking out of the office pain free. But I know that kind of testimonial sounds so unlikely it actually undermines the recommendation, but it's true!)

A locum GP became aggressive when I suggested valium for my agonising lower back pain just recently and refused to give any as he said they were more addictive than morphine.

Hi everyone just spoken with the doctor and he has prescribed me with some naproxen and said I can take co-codamal as well. Also had a referral to the muscular skeletal clinic with the hope of having a scan on my back. Have been advised to move about as much as I can. Thanks for all the advice. Hopefully can start to feel a bit better now. 😊

Hi i find laying on my bed flat with a pillow on my knee helps a little releasing pressure from my spine

Under my knees I meant sorry :)
