got some blood test results back today, rang the doctors surgery to be told they're normal

choesterol is 5 and glucose is 4.5

now i think I know that the 5 is o.k. - have googled it and can't find anything about the glucose bit that doesn't look like some sort of medical dissertation

anyone got any useful links/explanations ?

thanks in advance

Fasting blood test results interpretation

Okay and interpreting the medical dissertation anything below six is fine on the glucose front.

Yup both normal what else would you want to know

elfsmum · 21/09/2007 11:32

just wanted to know what the glucose bit meant.

Also my family have a history of heart disease, dad started having heart attacks in his 40's died at 64 of ishaemic (sp) heart disease, brother with angina at 38, both sisters with raised cholesterol.

looking at the info on the net up to 5 seemed o.k. and 5 to 6.4 was mildly raised, so does 5 put me borderline.

and with my family history should I do anything about it ?

Hi Elfsmum.

The glucose is normal so no need to do anything else.

Cholesterol is meaningless on it's own-whilst a cholesterol of 5 is fine for a young person with no risk factors, it would be too high for a diabetic smoker, say.

Also , your family history is an important risk factor but it is very difficult to actually quantify the risk.

So, with someone like you, I would emphasize that it is vital that you-are a nonmoker, maintain a normal weight, take plenty of regular exercise, drink alcohol in moderation , have a healthy low fat diet.

I would also talk to you about cholesterol lowering medication.

I would probably be reluctant to prescribe to you at the moment but would talk to you about it so you are aware and could choose what you want to do.

Being female does seem to have some protective effect but your FHx is strong.
If you haven't talked this thru with your GP, may I suggest that you do?
