Coming off mirtazapine

Just wondered if anyone had any "success" stories on how to do this? The pharmacist said I shouldn't cut my 15mg tablets in half, which leaves me a bit lost!

What has the GP suggested? Could you maybe take them every other day?
I haven't tried coming off mine yet so dont have actual experience.

15mg is the lowest dose. Have you been higher than this and come down this far, or is this the only dose you have been on.

What about every other day for a couple of weeks - also you should be doing this with your GP so see what they say.

So sorry, I thought this didn't post earlier and gave up!

The doctor said I could try cutting them in half as they're a scored tablet; the pharmacist said no as they have a film coating on them.

I'm slightly worried about doing every other day as I've heard about terrible withdrawal side effects if you're not careful.

I've only been on this dose and for about 3 months, but I'm hypersensitive to medications a lot of the time.

I took them initially to help with sleep and I'd like to quit if possible - I feel I've had a good few months of sleep now, and would like not to be dependent long term.

I have been on this for 15 years, tried numerous times to come off, even had the liquid version, but I am so sensitive to it, and the tiniest tinkering with my dose really affects me, so much that I cannot cope, I am dizzy, headache, angry, cannot even stand up, nausea, oh the nausea! Its the worst I have ever felt, would rather die than feel so bad. I could not function so always end up back on them. Just resigned to staying on them nowConfused

Sorry not a good story

Oxyiz · 26/05/2020 11:02

I'm sorry to hear that, that's awful Endotherm! (And exactly the sort of thing I'm worried about.)

Maybe I'll wait till I have a week off in July and see what the first few days are like then.

Just do it slowly, the withdrawal effects don't kick in properly for about 10 days, 2 weeks, so you think you are fine at first!

MyFuckingFairyGarden · 26/05/2020 11:33

That medicine makes me super sick. I didn't realise the first time that it was this which caused a number of my problems, til I tried it again some years later. I clicked on here thinking I could help but you're describing something similar to what I get from tinkering or trying to stop my venlafaxine.

Advice usually suggests every other day, but then I don't know because I didn't expect anyone to have described it the way you have.

So, good luck Cake I hope you get there Smile

Hi, I took mirtazipine 15mg for 6 months several years back whilst going through my divorce. Like yourself it was mainly for sleep problems.

The GP advised every other day or stopping completely as the dose was the lowest. I opted to stop completely and was absolutely fine, no noticeable side effects. Although, unlike other PP who have shared their experience, I'm not really sensitive to medication in that respect. I had no side effects going onto the meds in the first place (other than felt a bit spacey the morning after my first dose), done know whether that plays a part.

Good luck x

Thanks everyone - it sounds like trying every other day is the best idea, and then expecting a good few weeks/a month or so of withdrawal symptoms.

Fingers crossed it'll be just like yours lucie.
