looking for gamegirly (or anyone else)! blocked intestine/poo

Gamegirly, you responded in May to my post about my dd having mesenteric adenitis. My dd has finally been diagnosed this week as having blocked intestines - with basically concrete like poo about 2 years worth. Odd as she never shows any sign o f constipation (they generally don't the doc said)- . she has been given a drug to take 2 times a day but it'll take several months to clear. Any advice - what happened to your ds? Can you remember. She is still off school - since march basically done about 3 weeks all told at school, odd days here and there. and still screaming. Anyone have any natural remedies?

fruit cubes are very good, i know you said she doesnt show any sign of constipation but tis obviousley a problem, so i would give lactulose and fruit cubes (although check the pack to see if a child of her age can have these)

ska · 20/09/2007 19:15

thanks - i will try these. she is on movicol - wonder if these are compatible?

Sorry, I didn't spot this until now (and I've changed my name).

DD1 had a blocked intestine, DD2 had mesenteric adenitis. They are different things.

Your poor DD! She really does have it badly though, doesn't she? Mine was only unwell for a week or so. She was also given movicol and we were lucky because that cleared it up. Does she drink plenty, because neither of mine drink nearly enough and the doc thought that was one of the causes. I'm so sorry I can't help more, it must be breaking your heart to see her in pain. Funnily enough, one of DD2's friends has also just been in hospital with the same thing, although her mum says she drinks plenty. I honestly don't know what else to suggest other than fibre and fluid, but I think I'd be inclined to take her back to the doctor again.

Best wishes to both of you.

Poor thing!

I can only think of traditional remedies such as prune juice/fig syrup followed by lots of water.
give lukewarm water, much better to flush system.

slim22 · 21/09/2007 11:23

Aloe vera is also very good to clean intestines, mention it to your Dr as I'm not sure really appropriate age wise.

ska · 21/09/2007 11:55

thanks to you both. It is heartbreaking and exhausting and I haven't really been able to work much since March when she first started being ill. So now am in debt too but that's another story. And my dh's patience is wearing thin - he works full time in a really demanding job and the lack of sleep is really getting to him. I feel like areally crap mother for letting her get like this but honestly she hasn't had any obvious constipation symptoms.

So, went to GP today and got a really kind one with a small child herself who won't go to the loo at school and she has doubled the dose and suggested a couple fo things but also ASKED to see her back next Tuesday to see how she's doing.

I am going to ask the school to send me some homework for her too as she is missing so much school (only done 5 days this year so far and missed all but a few days last term).
Thanks again

Very, very wearing for all of you. Glad you've found a kind doctor though. It doesn't sound "normal" so do keep taking her back and insisting they take you seriously.

Hello

My dd is also on movicol - have found it to be a lifesaver. She has the paediatric one but pharmacist does try and give me the half strength one - says its the same - but it must taste different cos dd can tell.

We also give her dried fruit mush mixed in with her breakfast every day (we mix up loads of dried prunes / apriocots / raisins etc in a pan of boiling water, simmer for a bit, allow to cool and then freeze in cubes / small pots) and try and get her to drink as much as possible. Like others have said, she really doesn't drink a fat lot and think this contributes to problem.

All the best

ska · 21/09/2007 12:05

ejb - how old is yours?

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/09/2007 15:37

My dd is on Movicol too - has been for a few years now. It's fab - I wish it had been available when I was young as I suffered with major intestinal problems; had surgery as a baby and in my twentys.

ska · 21/09/2007 17:09

at the moment we are 4 days in and have just had the dose doubled to the maximum allowed and there is no difference at all! any idea when it should start to work? I am at my wits end. I need her to get well and go back to school. i need to work and i need to not have a child who screams in pain 24 hours a day. sorry if i sound selfish but i am desperate

OP posts:
saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/09/2007 17:38

It will take a while ska - you should allow up to 10 days I think but if no improvement then go back. How have they diagnosed the impactation, did she have a scan?

ska · 21/09/2007 23:18

by x ray - she had a scan months ago but they were looking for kidney problems not this. just found out that one of the drugs she had for 'irritable bladder' (another diagnosis) can make constipation worse! i think i just need to see the light at the end of the tunnel

stewed rhubarb is good to clear your intestines. DD recently had bad constipation with leakage and was given a numbing cream for then suppositories. Within minutes ...whooosh things were moving

ska · 12/10/2007 14:22

new bit to the saga - we have finally seen a really experienced paed consukltant and he doesn't think she has had any of this and he is investiagting ulcerative colitis/irritable bowel syndrome/chrons disease/ulcer (in stomach) coeliacs disease - in other words he doesn't know what it is but is trying. anyone have any ideas about pain relief - she is screaming in pain, crying, not sleeping - and neither are we.

Hi ska

Has the doctor prescribed any anti-spasmodic drug?

ska · 12/10/2007 16:33

no - would like him to. Gps now being really unhelpful imo. bhut paed seems to be really trying to help. he wants to avoid any new drugs until he is clearer on cause. he appears not to think the cause is pschological which is what the gps keep saying. but she lloves school and hates missing it

OP posts:
NoNameToday · 12/10/2007 16:53

ska, I can understand the paeds being reluctant to prescribe drugs until they have a diagnosis, however that doesn't help with the pain!

As an adult who has suffered these problems ( diverticular disease/colitis0 for many years, initially with a very poor GP, I do feel for you and your little one.

Press for an anti spasmoodic drug to be prescribed to help with the pain and ensure that little one has a very good fluid intake, this can help to alleviate the problem.

Sorry for the long post and hope this helps

ska · 12/10/2007 21:43

thanks. trying to keep her drinking lots but it is hard. today she's been worse again and very tearful. she said she wants to die. this has been going on since march and she has missed so much school and i've barely worked through looking after her. she's in tears now in her bed.
