Night sweats and hot flushes were my only symptom, albeit quite severe. I used various techniques to manage them but not drugs.
Two single duvets so DH can stay warm and I can have a thin one. A bedside table fan all year round. Air conditioning unit for summer.
Layers in bed. Thin nightie you can peel off if it gets soaked. A single sheet over you and under the duvet.

Talk to your GP. Might be worth going on HRT anyway. It does have risks but also advantages to your general health. There are some forms of HRT that are safer than others.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 24/05/2020 13:58

air conditioning in your bedroom and cotton nightie and bedding

bingowingsmcgee · 24/05/2020 14:01

What age are you OP, if you don't mind me asking? I'm getting these at 41, but gp won't let me have hrt because he says it's too soon.

MrsJoshNavidi · 24/05/2020 14:05

I just rode it out. Fresh pyjamas every night, and made sure to leave the bed to air every day by leaving the duvet pulled back.

I got a sage plant, put it on the kitchen windowsill and every night would grab a few leaves, pour boiling water on them with a spoonful of honey, and drink in bed. Solved mine almostly completely.

DramaAlpaca · 24/05/2020 14:15

This is totally anecdotal and I realise I'm only a sample of one, but after I started taking Menopace Plus vitamins which you can buy OTC my nighttime sweats reduced considerably within a couple of weeks and daytime overheating reduced as well. It might be coincidence but I'm sure it's helped me. It's worth a try if nothing else.

I layer my bed, I have just a sheet and a very light duvet and I fling them off and on. I have also, strangely, found that sleeping wearing a long sleeved thermal top helps keep me more comfortable.

I'm out the other side now, postmenopausal, and haven't felt the need for HRT as my symptoms were always quite mild.

Barkingfuckingdogs · 24/05/2020 14:17

Agree with sage. I took sage complex and it helped me enormously. Took about 3 weeks to kick in though.

Wicking fabric nightclothes, duvets, sheets and duvet covers.

Stops you getting so soaking wet from your nightsweats.

I bought Coolmax sets for my Dad when he had nightsweats (clearly not from the menopause! but sadly from cancer) and he swore by them, even taking his duvet into hospital with him.

All the Coolmax nightwear is v obviously marketed at women so you can tell women with the menopause is a much bigger market than elderly men with cancer - the fabric is usually used for athletic gear to stop you getting sweaty.

I found advice from The Period Repair manual helpful; I can't remember if this was specifically for night sweats but taking magnesium, taurine and b6 has helped a lot. She mentions some other supplements, as I say can't remember what was specifically for night sweats. She's got a fb page and articles on various websites so don't necessarily need the book. I saw the same advice a few other places too. B6 has a lot of research around it.

I also started seed cycling and that's definitely had an impact on my cycle too.

There may be more help / info here. Links to research too

@bingowingsmcgee I was early 40s when my GP gave me HRT patches. It’s more important the younger you are as you should have those hormones still at that age. Go back if you still feel you need to. I’m now late 50s and still on HRTwith GPs blessing.

Elouera · 26/05/2020 08:30

During non-covid times, my local family planning clinic run menopause clinics so you can discuss your symptoms and go through treatment options with either a specialist nurse or gynae Dr. Might be worth looking them up in your area.

Until they re-open, some people find red clover supplements help symptoms.

bingowingsmcgee · 26/05/2020 09:16

gin thanks so much for that. It's as I thought. I wonder which, or how many, symptoms I need to report before they'll give it to me.

Maryward · 26/05/2020 09:47

Also get your thyroid checked. I was having dreadful night sweats & turned out the problem was under active thyroid not menopause at all! I’m 42, so dr did think was menopausal but blood hormones were normal range, night sweats disappeared with thyroid meds.
Just something to check if you’re at earlier age range for menopause!

RaininSummer · 26/05/2020 09:51

Sage complex or menopace were helpful. Also having a cool pillow insert was lovely. I also find sugar and alcohol make hot flushes at night worse.

dontdisturbmenow · 26/05/2020 10:39

Reducing sugar and I creasing water consumption help me a lot.
