Should i go to A&E or not? - Bad Foot.

I fell over last thursday and really hurt my foot, bad enough that i had to call the paramedic to come out because i was home alone with my 1yr old DS and couldnt drive.

They thought i may have broken a bone in my foot, or badly sprained it, but said i'd be ok just staying home, giving it the RICE treatment and taking painkillers.

Well, now its 6days later, i'm not in any severe pain, but my foot aches and there is a point on the midfoot that hurts if you so much as touch it, i've only got 20% movement in toes 2-4 (i can't flex them at all) and some really nasty bruising is coming out at the base of them.. its black...

I can drive, but still home alone with DS which'd mean he'd have to come with me. If i do go, i'm going to wait til his nap time so he's hopefully sleep in his pram for most of it

WWYD??

Call NHS Direct and ask their advice. 0845 46 47.

have you got a minor injuries unit?

I'd go to them or book an appointment with your gp as it's not an emergency (IYSWIM)

nailpolish · 19/09/2007 11:10

do you have a minor injuries clinic nearby? i wouldnt say this requires A&E
the minor injuries clinic would still have xrays etc and you would be seen quicker than A&E (you would be v low down on the priorities list)
or go and see the gp. he can refer you to the hospital for xray if he thinks its necessary, and he will phone ahead to tell them you are coming, so you wont have to wait

or phone NHS 24

I think (didn't go to the doctors) that I broke/cracked one of my little toes a few years ago and it was painful/immobile/bruised in the way you describe for a long time. It'd completely fine now but there was some pain if I bent it for a couple of months iirc.

I'm not sure that there's really much they'll be able to do for you tbh. Certainly see someone if it gets worse though.

A paving slab fell on top of DS's foot yesterday, onto the top middle of his foot. This morning he is still limping and when I press the injury area it hurts and he in uncomfortable. However there is no real swelling and only slight bruising (really slight).

I did umm and ahh about taking him in yesterday but thought I would wait and see how he was today but I a no more certain. It's not easy to get the the hospital but if needs be DH can come home.

Is it true that a break would always have swelling and discolouration? Would any harm be caused by waiting a day or two? I wouldn't want to cause more damage by doing so. He is walking but limping and on the side of his foot, IYSWIM?

bum, sorry, meant to start new thread!

Both Pfft and Kaishay - Probably need an xray, so minors rather than gp who will just have to send you to minors for an xray. But make sure your minors has access to xray when you go - some only do xray 9-5 - call the hospital or unit for advice.

Kaishay I would definitely go. Pfft, less so - really sounds just bruised. It would be sore for a few days even if not broken.

I am amazed you'd even consider a&e to be honest. No wonder there is always such a long wait there.
