Anyone out there with kidney disease?

I'm waiting for a referral regarding my declining egfr score (kidney filtration rate), which is currently 53 - had a scan and everything looks fine. I am otherwise healthy - good weight, normal blood pressure, no signs of diabetes. My egfr has gone down from 56 to 53 since December.

I won't get to see anyone for some time due to the coronavirus and I'm getting increasingly worried about what I should and shouldn't be eating.

Is anyone out there who has any knowledge/experience? The more I read about this, the more worried I get.

I have end stage kidney failure. I’m currently at 15 gfr and hoping to get a transplant before I need dialysis. High blood pressure and high potassium are the main things to keep an eye on but up until recently my consultant wasn’t recommending anything apart from a low salt diet. Sorry I’m not much help, I’ve been living with it for nearly 30 years and have only really been deteriorating in the last couple. I imagine it depends what type of disease you have though.

I have kidney disease, waiting on further investigation, all on hold because of the virus.

My kidney function has been deteriorating over the past several years.

I was told to drink 2litres of water a day,low salt diet,no Ibuprofen, only to use Paracetamol for pain relief.

I also am normal weight, normal blood pressure. No diabetes etc.

I am staying away from Dr Google, fills me with panic.

My DH has kidney disease and currently has an egfr of 18. Over the last 4 years this has varied between 20 and (a very scary) 14. He has had Type 1 diabetes for 55 years. He is generally very well - we have cycled at least 10 miles a day for the whole of lockdown, and currently eats and drinks normally. I am under no illusions that this will not continue longer term. Despite our ages (63 and 59), we are hoping that when the current crisis is over we will be eligible for a paired pool transplant with me as the donor. Failing that, then I am trying to get my head around dialysis, but I’m seriously struggling with that at the moment.

HairyPotter · 16/05/2020 08:59

Redbrook we are hoping to do the paired donor programme as well as DH isn’t a good enough match for me. Unfortunately things have ground to a halt due to Covid19 and he still had quite a few tests still to have to make sure he’s in a position to donate.

HairyPotter, I hope you don't have to wait too long for your transplant and Redbrook, I hope you are able to donate to your DH soon - these are really uncertain times if you are waiting for treatment.

480Widdio - sounds like we are in a similar boat. I have been trying to drink more water and have decreased my salt. I'm wondering about eating less meat and having more of a vegetarian diet. I've also given up all junk food and processed meat. I did indeed go straight to Dr Google when I found my egfr had gone down again - I got myself very confused and worried.
