DS is 6 months old and last tuesday underwent an operation to finally free him of his stoma.

24 hours after surgery he was on milk and 48 hours after surgery he was on solids.

4 days after surgery he was allowed home .

He is now pooing out of his bottom which is novelty for us and its so nice waking uing the night to the smell of "poo" and not of a burst stoma bag. His bum looks like a baboons and is very very sore BUT know what................................................................................................ ...............................................................he's still so happy and smiley and fixed and most of all hes ours. .

Sorry,no replies needed BUT just wanted to shout out how proud of him we are.

Well done little shhhh. And well done you for coping with such horrid beginnings
May it all be plain sailing from now on
Poo - who knew it could be so welcome eh???!!!

bookthief · 18/09/2007 22:27

cod - it's the opening on the outside of the body created to allow waste to bypass some part of the intestines e.g. in a colostomy procedure to bypass the colon.

You then have bad attached to the stoma to collect the poo.

bad??? Bag obv.

bookthief · 18/09/2007 22:29

I don't know Shhhh's story but her ds maybe had something wrong with some part of his bowel or rectum that meant it needed to be bypassed and left to recover.

They connect the intestine to the stoma opening but later when the sick bit has recovered they can reconnect you up inside. Obviously sometimes that's not possible and the stoma is permanent.

Fantastic, Shhh! Congratulations. I am thrilled for you.

Cod, I can't remember all the details, but he was very sick when he was a new born and had to have his plumbing rerouted to save his life. But, it appears he is all better now.

Neverenough · 18/09/2007 22:42

Brava shhh! You deserve to feel proud of yourself and your family.

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger!

sorry I haven't been back to this for a few days BUT things manic here.!!

DS is still doing very well. His bum is still very red but we expect this will e the case for a while longer.

Stressedteddy,poo is fantastic .!!!!
Neverenough, know what thats my very saying!!! I fully believe it.

eleusis, you are correct..thanks for explaining it to cod and cod just to let you know the details....
DS was born with hirschsprungs disease (where nerves are missing from the lower part of the bowel..we all need nereves to allow us to poo. DS couldn't/didn't know how to poo). Its apparently genetic BUT from what we know noone in our family has ever had it, BUT that said who knows how things were 60+ years ago.............babies died from it because it was unknown about and how to deal with it. Its apparently more common in 1st born boys although as ds was our 2nd born that theory goes out of the window, so I guess we were unlucky.

DS was admitted to hospital and then to our local childrens hospital at 3 days old where they guess HS disease but needed a biopsy. Due to his size it took 3 rectal biopsys and 5 weeks till it was confirmed HSD. .

DS was operated on at 7 weeks old and a pull through procedure was done (pulling the bowel through his bottom, cutting away the part that had nerves missing and restitching it back up). All was fine for a day BUT things never go as planned for us and ds developed entrocolitus (infection of his colon) and usually a wash out of his bottom would be given BUT due to it only days been stitched a stoma was made.

As told below, the bring the intestine/bowel to the front and a "bag" is placed over it allowing poo to be collected. This was only temporary BUT to live with it for 5 months was hell. Lif shouldn't be limited with it BUT we were changing the bags x4 a day (instead of every other day) due to leaks. Honestly to do the things to a baby that we had/have to do to ds is not what you imagine when you are carrying them pregnant. .

So ds's tummy is now fixed and he poo's into a nappy and not a bag!! . His scar is quite long but should even itself out.

xx

PurpleLostPrincess · 24/09/2007 17:41

shhh, you have given me inspiration!!! My DD2 was born 3 weeks early on 2nd September and at 3 days old was taken into hospital as she still hadn't had a poo. (I did point out to the discharge nurse that I couldn't see her bottom hole but thats another story!!). Needless to say she was very ill and to be honest I thought we were going to lose her. The consultant at Southampton NeoNatal (can't sing their praises enough) wanted her in theatre ASAP for a colostomy and she came out with a stoma bag fitted. I stayed at the hospital with her for almost a week as I was bf'ing... (In our case, she hasn't got a hole which is called 'anorectal anomaly').

She's just over 3 weeks old now and we've had a rough few weeks. I'm now topping her up with bottled milk and we're changing the bag every other day. I say that but there have been a few times when we've had to change it more often due to leaks bless her.

She's due to see the cardiologists tomorrow for a check up and is having something done to check her kidneys next week too. They've said she'll have her bottom built in about 6-8 weeks time and then the bag will come off 6-8 weeks after that.

It's such an emotional time and I really feel for you. You've given me hope that things can get better and work out - I can't wait for a pooey nappy LOL!

So pleased for you - don't you find that no matter how hard things seem, you just have to look at them and it all melts away? I'm having a teary day today but every time I cuddle her, its all worth it because she is so beautiful and I love her so much!
