hello i havent been diagnosed with asthma or anything related to my breathing really. but over the last couple of months ive noticed my breathing and chest getting worse and worse- feeling like i cant get a full breath, chest feeling tight as id someone was standing on it so im gasping for air. smoke and aerosols make it much worse and cause me to cough so much im nearly sick. this week i have developed this awful noise coming out my throat involuntarily every time i inhale and breathe in. not exhale, just inhale, right at the end. any ideas what it could be ? im worried and scared

im female, 26, and im 34 weeks pregnant but im
not sure thats related. Non smoker, no tempature and have been shielding so not likely to be Covid since it’s been going on for so long but has got worse and worse recently. :(

Please phone gp and get an appointment you will be tested for asthma. It may be the high pollen this year highest for 70years.

RoyalAlfred · 06/05/2020 19:36

Could it be asthma?

I have just been provisionally diagnosed at 38! Started early February and has progressed. I am on trial treatment. It has been a long road as dismissed as Covid (including two rounds of self-isolation). I am starting on the road to recovery after 3 weeks of treatment.

RoyalAlfred · 06/05/2020 19:39

And yes! On the pollen count. Really surprised how many people newly diagnosed or experiencing increased asthma symptoms - some with oral steroids for first time in 10+ years.

Try not to be scared. If asthma, lots of safe and effective treatment options.

Yes, ring the GP tomorrow. It could be one of lots of things (or more than one thing) but you definitely need medical advice.

Are you anaemic, by the way? Severe iron deficiency can cause breathlessness which won’t help.

HappyHammy · 06/05/2020 19:41

Poor you. Have you been seen by a doctor or midwife. I would ask for a callback from 111.unless you prefer to go and get seen in hospital.

Madwife123 · 06/05/2020 19:48

Your breathing is always compromised in pregnancy as your lungs are compressed, if you have pre-existing asthma this can be quite profound. It’s not unusual for women to be diagnosed as asthmatic in pregnancy as it’s the first time their breathing has suffered. Contact your GP and get your peak flow tested x

Catlover10 · 06/05/2020 20:23

Ok thank you everybody I will try not to panic. I will ring the doctors tomorrow but obviously everything is over the phone at the moment and I can’t imagine they’ll be too keen to see me given my symptoms, even though that noise on inhalation and the symptoms in general isn’t typical of Covid but we shall see.

I bought myself an oximeter and my saturation seems to stay above 96% even when I feel like I can’t breathe which is why I haven’t already contacted the hospital or just turned up at a and e etc. I’m sure being heavily pregnant isn’t helping much.

Thanks for the quick replies x

GPs are seeing patients after asking lots of questions. My GP has set up an online questionnaire, never thought they would join 21st century so worth checking gp website to see if yours have done this.

Catlover10 · 06/05/2020 20:29

@WrongKindOfFace

I was tested recently and think it’s came back fairly low but not enough to cause the symptoms so there is definitely something else going on, but yes I’m sure my iron levels not being on top form also won’t be helping and neither is carrying around a bowling ball all day! 👶🏻

@justasking111 ok then will check that out. Good to know they’re seeing patients at the gp surgery if they have to, and I know if I turned up at A and E they would examine me but I didn’t really want it to have to come to that and be considered as a suspected Covid patient, especially at the moment, so it really will be a last resort
