did you newborn baby peel after birth?

its something that has bothered me for years tbh. with both my dd's their skin peels, cracked and bled in the 1st few weeks. The creases in their skins were the worst affected, with dd1, her ankles were very cracked and bleeding. Nothign seemed to moisturise their skins fully, i tried all sorts of moisterisers on them, even the hv said try olive oil which didnt help. After the cracking, their skin peeled and flaked off, leaving them looking like lizards.

Just wondering if it happened to anyone else at all? both my dd's have eczema now, and part of me wonders if this was the 1st showing of it.

None of mine have eczema but all became very dry and 'peeled' after birth. Not to the extent you are describing though - they didn't bleed, it was more like when you have had a tan and it flakes off.

ditto to Skate.

my dd with DS had bleeding, cracked skin on her wrists and ankles. My other two peeled too - mainly on their abdomens and backs - but not to the same extent. Funnily enough dd with DS is the only one who doesn't have eczema.

Yes - this happened to ds1 - he was 5 days overdue and had scaly skin for weeks. I plastered him in olive oil after his bath daily and eventually it went. He has no skin complaints at all now though dd has small patches of excema and dry skin in general though no problems as a newborn - she was a few days early! Don't know if that bears any real significance, but someone (can't remember who) said it was common in late babies.

YEs, and the olive oil was useless, it only made him smell like goat cheese salad . DS had very severe eczema during his first year, so it may be.

No ezcema but both of mine had slight peeling fingers and v long fingernails which were virtually bent over at the end which I thought was a sign of "overcooking" as it were.

Aero · 09/10/2004 12:44

Oh yes - ds1's fingernails were so long they had to be cut the day he was born! Funny the things you forget about!

Chandra · 09/10/2004 13:05

Same with the nails here, I would'n have thought it was related... not sure about overcooking either, Ds was born at his due date and no chance of conceiving date error as I was on fertility drugs. [puzzled emoticon]

misdee · 09/10/2004 14:24

neither of mine were late. dd1 was bang on date, dd2 was week early. no long nails.

All 3 of mine were peely and had exceedingly dry skin for the first few months (DS2 at 4 still gets dry patches) and I always put it down to being 'overcooked' too. They were 8, 10 and 11 days late.

Poo2 · 09/10/2004 16:02

DS peeled top to toe like a snake - it was particularly bad round wrists and ankles, but no bleeding. He was a week late, and no problems with his skin since. Olive oil was crap and made him smell like a chippie. Groundnut oil is cheaper and doesn't have an odour.

dd was late and peeled too for weeks..she was also red, spotty and blotchy and has some birthmarks on her face. her skin is still strange...wherever someone's been holding her she goes bright red and looks like shes been slapped.

geekgrrl · 10/10/2004 07:52

mine weren't late either but still peeled (dd who peeled/bled was a week early)
